Looks great man, I would suggest you start using stock instead of renders

I usually do, but the idea for this tut was to use an image most people here would know- hence, this.

I just threw this one together real quick, but I like it. However, I'm not sure what to do with the background- I made two versions. Which do you think I should use?

I voted the non pixelated one (1st one) because the pixels just make it seem that the Sniper Rifle was just thrown on it. And, a quick suggestion for improvement, try to make the dark area where it says "The Swimmer... ect." more gradual instead of a darker box.

Like... a gradient overlay? Or try to fade from one side into the other?

Yeah, a gradient over lay. Take that box that is that shade and put a large gaussian blur on it. something like 50-75px should work nicely.
