Windows itself has a native burner. That works for data CDs/DVDs and even audio CDs. I don't know about DVD Video though.

Thank you. The amount of hassle I've had off of peers for using Chrome has been astounding.
Apart from a lack of add-ons and the fact you cant scroll by clicking the middle mouse button, it's amazing.

I just need something to burn regular DVDs for backing up files and such, not DVD video or anything.

http://www.imgburn.com/
imgburn is good but i doesn't have DVD movie or CD Movie creation capabilities. If you just need something to write files to CD or write som iso's then this is pretty much all you need.

BurnAware Free is also quite useful. Its nice and light and lets you burn many kinds of files.

POTP I need help in creating a new partition on my laptop drive. Is there any program I should use? Also what Linux distro would you recommend? I'm thinking of Ubuntu. Also, how much space would it need?

ubuntu only needs 6GB for OS files but you need more if you store files on it.
ubuntu live CD has Gparted which can help resize your partitions.

Burnaware Free did the job nicely :P

Can anyone recommend a program for re-encoding mp3 files? I generally re-encode all of mine to 128kbs because I can't tell the different between that and anything higher. (Saves iPod space that way)

Use itunes to do it, go into settings and put convert to mp3 and 128kbps. Any track you wish to convert just highlight and hit 'get mp3 version' then delete the original.

128k????? what kind of stone age head phones do you own that you would for 128k. 192 and above is the only acceptable bit rate. 128 is for the deaf.

My thoughts as well :S

Get rid of your shitty iPod bundles and get a decent 'phone for a change. If you're on a decent pair already you've got to be shitting me if you really can't hear the difference.

I seriously can't... Anything under 128 sounds crap, anything over sounds the same.

What should I be actually listening out for that's different?

Edit: Tried a few comparisons, the different between say 128 and 256 is minimal at best. As in, you have to be actively listening out for it. If someone puts a song on and says "Is this 128 or higher?" I'm not going to be able to tell.

128 sounds a lot scratchier though anything above 192 is a waste of space unless it's lossless.

I can't quite fathom why, but I've got an appreciation for the Core Media Player. I'm thinking its because it melts into the notification bar, and has a nice, clean and easily usable interface. There are probably a boat load of other features I haven't mentionned, but these are the chief reasons why I use it.

Also, I've stumbled on a superb anti-spyware tool: SuperAntiSpyware. Despite the shady name, its a very good anti-spyware tool. For one thing, its THOROUGH. It checks EVERY single file on your system if you set it to, some of which pass completely under the radar of Ad-Aware and S&D. I highly recommend it.

It's unlikely this list will be updated at this point as PotP has opened up an identical topic on SWR, but I'll leave it pinned nonetheless as it's a useful reference.
