Not sure where to post this... but does anyone know where this term comes from?

Eg.
"That movie was good."
"If by good you mean downright awful, then yes."

If by the origin of the term "If by X, you mean Y, then yes.", you mean the origin of snarky sarcasm, then it probably has been around since the dawn of human intellectual ability.
