A blind man who thought he would never be able to read again has had his vision partially restored after being fitted with a 'bionic' eye.

Peter Lane, 51, is one of the first people in the world to have electronic receivers implanted into his eye which send signals mounted in a pair of glasses to the brain.

The technology has allowed Mr Lane, from Manchester, to see the outline of objects, such as doorways and furniture, and to read letters through a series of dots of lights for the first time in almost 30 years.

You can read more here. It's pretty impressive stuff! :o

This is a giant step in the history of science.
Now let's hope this will be accessible to every blind person, and not only the rich guys...

Code is drunk! :P

But yeah, this is awesome stuff...though it must be quite problematic, since cops like to question people wearing sunglasses everywhere. ;)

Not drunk. It was a reference to the 6 million dollar man, quoting the scout from TF2. :P

Aside from your awful reference. Thats really good news. They always talk about progress this and progress that, but its good to see some physical proof.

Good start, but I'd rather stem cell research over bionics, it's a far more valuable area of medicine :(

So would i, it has far more potential to bring positive results.
But bionics is still quite awesome, we should have them both :bestpost:

This is really good to hear. Not to mention that in the future it could go even further (x-ray vision :bestpost: )

I think I might have aswell Dauth, or at least something simliar.
Anyway.

This is really good news towards a good area of science, though I agree with the steam cell talk above me.
Unfortunatly, because of the large amount of people who disagree with it, its becomming harder and harder for scientists to get a good amount of specimins.
High controversial and all that.
You almost did, didn't you?

Indeed, do recall ths from the Beeb a few months back, so much so that:

http://news.bbc.co.u...lth/7919645.stm

Different bloke, same procedure. It's nice, and obviously one of the best areas in which to apply bionics. However, I maintain that stem cell would be a better thing to research more, but the ethical implications, as Brad mentions, are ridiculous. I doubt I'll ever see them used properly in my lifetime, but I hope that there is hope for future generations.
