I don't know how to import w3d files into 3dsmax 7. I can export them, but I can't figure out how to import them.

How do you import a W3D or gmax into 3dsmax 7?

AFAIK W3D plugins you used in gmax also works in 3dsmax 7.
Also, you can try using Bobo's File Format to import your scenes from gmax to 3dsmax and vice-versa.
However, I am not sure if BFF do work with gmax, though.

For W3D, You can always use coolfile's W3D Importer for Gmax. It works for 3dsmax 7 too
as for gmax files, I don't know

I had trouble fixing it to work for 3dsMax9, but it finally worked. The problem for me is, I can't export. Each time I use the exporter (from the Mod SDK) it says : Don't know how to save(export or w/e) file.

I can't figure out how to get that to work with Coolfile's W3D Importer. I get some error message.
If I can get the coolfile importer working, I would be fine.
