Free video editor?
WarMenace 20 Jun 2010
I'm going to make a trailer soon for my mod, C&C Black Nuke... But I don't want to use a flimsy, lame, stupid video editor like Windows Movie Maker. Anyone got any ideas what kind of free video editor I could use?
Trials, full demos, whatever... I'm not sure if this is the place to ask. Also, before anybody says anything, yes, I have googled it up and tried a few free ones, but to no avail.
Thanks a lot guys.

Well good luck with your search, I've already tried to find video editing programs many times, but never succeeded to find a decent one... I ended up using Windows Movie Maker 2.5, which I still found more advanced than all the other freeware programs.
I also tried one shareware program from Sony (I think it's name was Sony Vegas Pro, anyway they have only one program of that kind AFAIK) and I must say that it was very impressive, but maybe a little overcomplicated when you are a neophyte

Thanks guys for the links. I'll see to it that I try one of those programs, and if they don't work for me, then, well... Movie Maker.. lol

I would recommend Vegas if you can get ahold of a copy, Premiere Pro is tough to get to grips with, but Vegas has a lot of useful features with it that just aren't half as hard to use. . Nero also has a decent video editing package, but I know that's paid for and am unsure of what the demo can/can't do.

Nero demo just holds the most basic burning tools, and so does it's trial version... Also, their video editing programs is lame, just as Roxio's (I tried both of them since I had them for free with my OEM PCs)

Honestly I just want a free software that allows me to fast forward, rewind, better text animations, better text, and overall easy to use. Nothing special, just simple stuff..

Have you tried the new (well kind of, it's got pretty old now) version of Movie Maker ? Maybe you're using the one which came with XP and Vista, in which case you should upgrade
WarMenace 20 Jun 2010
Nah I still have XP, and honestly I don't get why I still have it. I need to upgrade this piece of crap lol.
BeefJeRKy 20 Jun 2010
I would suggest PiTiVi, but it's linux only, so maybe you'll want to fire up an Ubuntu disc
If not, you could try the new Movie Maker (haven't tried it myself) and see if it's useful.
If your project is a one time thing, try a demo of Adobe Premiere Elements. It's much simpler than the CS5 version.

Indeed. Win 7 is way better now that it is stable
But for the moment just try to upgrade Movie Maker, the new version has more options and handles more formats (Just don't mistake it for Windows LIVE Movie Maker though, that one is a crappy version which can only makes slideshows of your vacation pictures

Alright I'll see what I can do with WMM.

Time to upgrade Windows I guess... Anyone got a free copy of Windows 7??

I moved it here, i felt it fit this forum more than GD.
WMM isn't too bad, an inexperienced user might get all they needed from it.

If you're in university, chances are you can nab a free copy or in a worst case with a juicy discount (at AUB Win7 HP is free while Pro is a $20 upgrade).
Even at school as a student, you could find some cheaper copy of Win 7.

If I might ask, does anyone know what kind of software SWR uses for it's intros? I kinda want to make an intro like that of some sort.
EDIT: Nevermind, I found out my brother-in-law has another copy of Windows 7. Yay for me! That'll be his 4th copy lol.

Windows 7 doesn't come with movie maker, you do know that?
If you upgrade it you will have to download movie maker 2.6, or WLMM, whcih apparently is what you don't want, but I havent tried it myself, I couldn't tell you how good it is.
Here is all the info you need for windows software.

TBH, I've been looking every now and again for decent free software to edit videos for the past 3-5 years, and you won't find it unless you're looking for spyware. Your best bet is seriously to either pay or get WMM.
