Minecraft Server
TheDR 20 Apr 2011
Me and Wiz have been wondering if it would be worth getting a FS Minecraft server.
Do the poll and then post in here if you are interested.

I'm still quite new to Minecraft, but I think this could be a laugh
The alternative to renting is that we use my comp, but that could be far more complicated than I am prepared to bothered with tbh.

A small server would be fun indeed, I finally got me the game so I can join BTW

Someone who doesn't even have the game, I presume.
There should be an option for don't own the game btw D:

I haven't got the game, nor am I even slightly interested in doing so, however, I don't doubt that a server could be handy if we have enough players.

I think the main opposition to this would be efficiency rather than anything else. Like most games of its kind Minecraft requires a lot less bandwidth/throughput than other games so it is quite likely to be more cost-effective to just have someone with decent internet host a server considering how small this community is.

I would say yes if I already didn't have a server which a friend hosts

Agreed, minecraft server would be nice. If the connection would be any way bareable would be playing there.

13 potential players. That sounds like a reason to invest in a server. I think that given timezones, a 10 player server seems about right methinks. Further comments welcome, but when I get the time I'll look into this for us

Err... Minecraft servers don't have slots.
They use ram or memory (from some quick research) as the basis of the monthly cost.

Also there's the option to use a Hamachi-based server. But that would take a powerful PC.

The ones I've seen do....

How powerful are we talking?
Would an i7 965 with 12gb do you?
Sgt. Rho 24 Apr 2011
Well, my PC does for 4 players (including myself), and it's 2 GB ram and 2.61ghz. So I think it might just do.

I'll keep it to 10 for the time being, primarily due to cost. If it becomes worth increasing the player capacity we can do that later. Not sure when I am going to be able to get this ready though. Things are pretty busy. Doc, if you get time, would you take a look around for me? Or anyone else for that matter.

Sure. Hobbesy had a few server ideas, I will talk to him when he gets on and have a look around myself.

For those of you who wish to have some further input into our potential MC server, would you be able to join me in the IRC tonight at approximately 2100-2200 (BMT)? Or between now and about 1700 if you can't make that.
