Gents, which processor can you strongly suggest that's good for gaming, AMD or Intel?

Which type of AMD/Intel would you prefer for gaming? i.e. Athlon 64, Opteron, Sempron, Core 2 Extreme, Core 2 Duo, PD 9xx Dual Core, PD 8xx Dual Core, P4 6xx 64 Bit, Celeron 3xx...

I honestly need to know if it's ok that I get a 3.0GHz+ only for gaming or kinda not practical? :read:

AMD FTW. Especially if it's dual core. 3+ Ghz? Go for it, man. AMD is made for gaming.

Do processors also have effects on certain applications? i.e 3DS Max, Maya, etc

Core 2 duo is the best processor out there, considering that a 2.4ghz dual core core 2 duo is faster than a 3.0 ghz AMD dual core. And theres also the 2.93 ghz Core 2 Extreme. However, they arn't cheap, core 2 duo 1.8 ghz is 180 bucks, the 2.4 ghz is a lil more than 300 dollars. with AMD, you could get a dual core 2 ghz processor for less than 150 dollars (near 100 dollars last I checked).

Applications have benefit of it if they have been written that way. Currently not a lot supports it yet but I think in the future there'll definately be more supported.

AMD is better for gaming afaik, and also from principle I choose AMD.

I've bought an AMD 64 FX 6000+ dualcore, it should arrive here in some days.

Get Core 2 Duo. Amd is behind the game at the moment in the high and mid range processor.

The low end Athlons are pretty good if you want a low end machine. AMD next line of processors which are scheduled for end of this year might bring them back in the fight but as of right now the core 2's are just whipping the AMD stable in all fronts.

i would go with the athlon...maybe a 4.2 ghz?
depending how much dosh u got.
amd is definately for gaming whereas i think intel is more all round

but i think the best option at mo would be an asus mobo that is SLi ready

i must say that AMD will work better with most games, andwindows now works with AMD so if you ever want vista, AMD is the way to go :read:

I can't believe POTP and I are the only ones who say Core 2 Duos are on top of any other consumer processors. I'll go get some benchmarks to show y'all (it'll be edited in). Warning, a lot of pictures...

Wow. Those are the same pics I saw that swayed my judgement from AMD to Intel.

I bought the Core 2 Duo E6600 and haven't had any regrets.

There are no AMD and intel mobos... I think...

Anyways, I'm not saying that AMD is bad, it's just htat Intel is better, the problem is, Intel is more expensive, so if you want a good performing, decent dual core, you can get it really cheap from AMD.

Woah thanks Eddy, really helpful, can you post the site where you got these comparisons so I can read it further? :locky:

But still I'm confused. I just want to run C&C3 and SupCom as flawless as possible and some sites recommend AMD, what the hell? :???:

I think you can run them flawless with either processor really. Your graphics card is a more important factor. AMD + Nvidia is a good combination.

Get a dualcore from either AMD or Intel though, to be prepared for the future you can better buy a dualcore processor rather than a single core processor now (Intel's are called Core 2 Duo, AMD's wear the X2 mark).

Not for much longer, AMD took over ATi, it'll be Green and Red, and Black and Blue for the next generation of cpus, mobos, and graphics cards. Anyways, Nvidia and Ati are both good options, but Nvidia is the only one with a DirectX10 card (8800GTS and 8800GTX). Anyways, graphics cards matter more usually, but if your CPU is a 2.4ghz P4, you will need a CPU. A CPU will sometimes bottleneck a graphics card, but most times it's the other way around, even two 8800GTXs will bottleneck probably a Core 2 Duo E6600 (in otherwords, if the graphics card was faster, the game would run even better, while if you have a crap CPU, if you got a better CPU, then the game would run better).

uh?
I thought DX10 will be compatible with pretty much any graphics card as it is only software tho it would run better wih newer cards.

Nope, in a year and a half or so, your graphics cards will be outdated, unable to run newest games. You might be able to using omega drivers and tweaking (that's what i did with my old directx 8.1 card). Directx10 is a pretty big jump up, but no games currently require it, so it's not neccessary.

see intel has more experience in the dual core department then AMD and that clearly shows in its performance in not only gaming but also in day to day application. both amd and Intel would do but just 5% more price for the processor only is giving you a 10% performance boost so i say you should seriously go for Intel. Also in my experience the Intel motherboards are cheaper and better loaded and have more variety then AMD ones so there again is another thing to consider. Also with a intel you can install a Haxed version of Apple OS X on your PC. Can be done on a AMD too but intel is easier to install.

Get an Intel Core 2 Duo E6thousand series CPU. Great benchmarking statistics, very powerful core (And, when housed properly fairly cool). The same motherboards that run the C2Ds will be able to run the Quad Core Intels, so if you're really rich in a years time, you can upgrade the processor without upgrading the mobo.
