Bob's Recommended Firefox Plugins
Slightly Wonky Robob 09 Sep 2007
Well since there have been a lot or 'recommended software' threads as of late, I thought I would start one on Firefox plug ins that I personally recommend, broken down into categories:
Useful Plugins:
Adblock Plus - The ultimate plugin for blocking annoying pop-ups and adverts, and generally making surfing the interweb a nice experince again.
Backgroundimage Saver - Does what it says on the tin, allows you to save background images. That maybe nothing new, however this plugin also gives you a work around to sites that put annoying blocks, stopping you from saving images.
ChatZilla - This is just a plugin that adds an irc client right into FF. I personally rarely use it, because i use trillian, however its always a good backup, for when trillian decides "it wants the day-off".
Download Statusbar - This may have only happened to me, but the normal download window used to dramatically slow down my computer, sometimes to the point of crashing. This extension not only solved this problem for me, but also added downloads into a neat little toolbar on the bottom. This means you can easily keep track of downloads, while browsing the interweb.
Fasterfox - A little plugin that increases performance of surfing the web, essentially it starts to download content for all the links on the page in the background, meaning when clicking the link, the site is already saved in the cache. This plugin isn't perfect, and certainlly doesn't always work, however it adds a neat little times in the corner, so you can rant about how long a site is taking to load
FireFTP - A great plugin that adds a FTP client right into the browser. This was infact the first FTP client i have used, so i have nothing to compare to, however i know it only has basic functions, but i found it very useful and easy to use.
FoxyTunes - A great plugin that i used to use, which adds a small UI to the browser, allowing you to control most music software. This plugin also has a 'currently playing' feature, when you hover. A new feature is that you can add currently playing into your e-mail signature... why you want to do that, i dunno, but you can do it (P.S. The reason i stopped using it was because i started listening to the radio, rather than saved music)
Google Toolbar - This a useful toolbar for obvious reasons. It hosts a whole range of generic google features and searches.
Google Web Accelerator - Works on a similar principle to faster fox. However this extension sometimes causes problem with sites (incl. E-Studios D:), as well as some sites blocking users of it.
Launchy - A good little plugin that i mainly use for web developing, easily allowing me to test (launch ) a site in multiple browsers. This also gives you the option of viewing the source in a program of your choice.
Link Alert - A very simple concept behind this plugin, but possibly one of the most useful IMO. This plugin changes the cursor when you point to a link, depending on the type of link, this is very useful for determaning what a link truly is.
OpenDownload - Another simple plugin that adds "open" to download prompts, it automatically selects the defualt program (you have set) but you can also browse for another program.
PDF Download - I always stayed away from pdf files, because they took so long to load. This plugin has a great function allowing you to view pdf as a html file. This does remove formatting, but gives you a general overview, meaning if you think its a file you want to view, you can download it, with out wasting time downloading something you don't want.
Tab Mix Plus - A very good plugin that adds much more functionallity and customisation to tabs. You can decide on sizes, positions and buttons included (Both on the tabs and tab bar). One useful function i like the most is the ability to set a focus parameter, so if i hover over a tab for 2 seconds it selects it. The other major section of this plugin is adding a session manager.
Update Notifier - Once again a small plugin that alerts you to updates of your plugins and themes.
Web Developer - A great toolbar (that also adds items to the right-click menu), this is mainly useful for web developers, although not entirely limited to that purpose. It features many tools such as, resizing, disabling, removing, changing various aspects of a site (images, links, css, forms, etc.)
Imagshack I have this plugin on my laptop, useful for quickly uploading images from your pc or online pics. However, i personally prefer the desktop version which i have installed on my PC (which can be found here)
DownThemAll I actually had this when i posted the first list, however forgot to post it . This is a great tool for batch downloads, pausing/resuming downloads and increased download speed.
Foxmarks Bookmark Synchroniser I personally haven't used it, but from what i gather it is a great tool if you use multiple computer, or you are away from home and want access to your bookmarks. It does what it say on the tine, synchronises your bookmarks!
ThumbStrips This is a great plugin. It adds a filmstrip of thumbnails (hence the name ) of all history, which can be minimised. This is a lot better than the history sidebar, which i find very annoying, i never find what i want, if i new what the url was, i wouldn't need history. Which is why this is so great, it shows thumbnails, so you know exactly what page you'll be looking at. The list can be sorted in a number of manners, including manually, and the GUI is very easy to use. Also there is a real-time search which is a bonus
FoxClocks I haven't had an opportunity to test this one out... but i'm always forgetting what the time zones of various places are, when i'm talking to people via msn/irc... so this will be a great tool where i can instantly see what time it is where they are.
Novelty Plugins:
Firesomething - A little plugin that changes "Mozilla Firefox" to "Mozilla <RANDOM WORD>" yes its a bit pointless, but gives you a laugh
STOP! Hammertime! - Possibley the best plugin ever. When you click stop it plays "STOP! Hammertime!". It is a bit buggy, but 10/10 for novelty factor (Related: STOP in the name of love! )
TabRenamizer - This in theory could be useful, but lets be honest, we just want to rename porn pages, so they're aren't suspecious
Tab Effect This plugin adds a great transition effect when swapping tabs. Simple as that.
I never realised i had so many
Anyway, got an plugin you think should go on this list? Recommend it.

Thanks for the tip, last time i checked the toolbar it was only for IE so i didn't bother getting it. I'll give it a tril, and if i thinks it's good, i'll add it to the list (seems good so far )

Aviod webaccelator at all cost. the software is retarded. it basically caches any link seen in a page before you even click the link. its unnecessarily wastes bandwidth and if you are and admin of a site then dont even think about it because it has a tendency of trying to cache the delete button links and hence end up deleting vital stuff from your forum/website/blog.
The rest of the links are good.
Also might be good idea to include the link to firefox itself in the opening sentence

Imagebot is one of the most useful Firefox plugins. You can batch upload, upload a picture from the web just with a right click, and much more.
Alias recommended.

Firing this up again, it has come with great sorrow that I see mods die because the Harddisk with all the progress of it dies. This is only one of the reasons that this plugin could help as a safeguard.
Gspace allows you to use the webspace given by Gmail to store files on the world wide web. It's handy aside from that the large space can be used as a safeguard for these important files.

I would not recommend that "google web accelerater. This is simple spyware which leads all adresses (http) you visited directly through the google servers (coolecting information).
Also:
- Cookies are being saved at google which can lead to the fact that someone else will be logged in with your name at amazon, ebay etc....
- all passwords, usernames, eMail Adresses are being routed through google (you really don't want that, now do you?)
- by collecting all that information google may create a whole surf profile of you
So, no thanks: no "Google Web Accelrater" for me

Well been a while since i updated the thread, and i was just trying to find a plugin which i thought would be a good idea, a tab grouper.. i didn't find what i wanted... however, did find a few other cool tabs (main post updated too):
Useful Plugins:
Imagshack I have this plugin on my laptop, useful for quickly uploading images from your pc or online pics. However, i personally prefer the desktop version which i have installed on my PC (which can be found here)
DownThemAll I actually had this when i posted the first list, however forgot to post it . This is a great tool for batch downloads, pausing/resuming downloads and increased download speed.
