Nissan "Godzilla" beats 997TT (911 Turbo) around the ring!

Yep, the new Nissan GT-R (they dropped the skyline name, which makes me sad) beat the 911 turbo around the Nurburgring by almost 2 seconds:

7"38 seconds vs. 7"40 seconds in the 911 turbo.

Also, the GT-R will cost from 70,000-80,000 base compared to about 120,000 on the turbo. You can't help but admire that car. All those people were praising the Z06 for competing with the turbo and nearing it's performance for 50,000 dollars less, now the GT-R comes along at about the same price and beats the Turbo's performance...

Torque: 434lbs/ft@3200RPM
Curb Weight: 3800lb (!)

Well, the Evo was in a totally different league in the first place. In japan, the GT-R sold for upwards of 60k (in US dollars) IIRC, to have the base Skyline GT-R imported to America and new it cost 89k. The evo costs 30-40k. Although the skyline only did have 280HP in Japan and cost that much money, it's because a bunch of companies made a gentlemans agreement and didn't go over 280hp, the RB26DETT engine is very easily tuned and can go to 500hp on the stock block.

Anyways, I do like the Evo X, but it really is not in the league of this GT-R.

The styling of the GT-R sickens me. All it is, is a chiseled 300Z with sewer drains for exhaust pipes. The only thing linking it to the original is the taillights. It now has a V6 instead of a straight six. The only thing that really saves it is the fact that it's still all-wheel drive. Nissan's name is a dime a dozen, I'll take the Porsche any day.

I don't like this new version of the Skyline...switching from a straight six (which has been put in all Skylines since I believe the R30 or R31) to a V6 is pointless. Plus, the looks are crap.

I'll take a Nissan Skyline GT-R R33 or R34 anyday over this one, even if they only make 280 horsepower. The attraction those two generations of Skylines will never be surpassed by the R35 (which would be this one).

It makes me sad Nissan pretty much destroyed their top of the line sports car's good name.

You people who like Porches... Try explaining to a friend exactly what Porsche you have.

"It's the 997TT"
"What's that?"
"It's the 911 Turbo"
"There are loads of 911s...."
etc.

With the Nissan. You know what it is, no questions asked.

The world is already confused as it is with the number of 911s available on the market. As Jeremy Clarkson put it, "the chances of you walking into a Porsche dealer and coming with the car you want are next to none."
There's the 911, the 911 Turbo, the 911 S.... and it goes on. Then you go into the actual model numbers.. 996, etc.

Honestly though, if you want something in the Porsche 911s price range, the Noble M15 is a much better choice. It's a beautiful machine and it's a much better performer. The car is a mid-engine too, unlike the rear-engined 911s so you have better weight distribution.

I really am not a Porsche fan. To be honest, for an exotic car, it is definitely too common to have a head-turning effect on people because in the real world, those performance figures count for nothing.

Tis a bit fugly, but its far better than the 911 which i hate, tho for those who can't tell the difference Top Gear did give a useful visual aid, however i can't find it on youtube.

Maybe it's because I'm a car-guy, but I find it easy to distinguish a 997 from a 997TT. You may not have to explain to a friend what you have, just merely show them, problem solved.

And I don't know about you guys, but Porsches are a rare sighting around here, whereas Nissans are like crap....they're everywhere.

On a normal day i'll see a 911 somewhere, they're almost as common as beemers now, tbh if you're after rarity you'll have to go more upmarket.

Well... a 3.8 liter inline-6 seems.... a little extreme for me. And although the RB26DETT is basically a legendary engine among tuners, along with the JZ2 (Supra's late engine), Nissan seems to be straying away from making their sports car a tuner. THey want to make it more of an exotic sports car than one that is supposed to be tuned up. BTW, the RB26DETT was used from the R32 to the R34, the R30 and R31 never existed, as there were skylines for those times (the V30 and V31), but they were just normal sedans, no GT-R models basically.

Your forgetting the R32, which is the lightest and fastest onf of them all. Barely tuned, that thing could produce 420HP and smoke vettes and cars like that in the day. ANyways, like i said before, the RB26DETT engine was tuned down to 280HP because of a gentlemans agreement, put a new ECU (aka computer) in there, and it'll produce upwards of 320 hp right off the bat.

Anyways, nissan destroyed their rep as a manufacturer of top line tuning cars (just like TOyota when they stopped selling the Supra), but they've established themselves in the more exotic sports car market. Beating the 997TT around the ring is no small feat.

Anyways, i find it somewhat hard to distinguish the 911 models, but if you get a bunch of car magazines every month, you get used to it. THe difference between normal Carreras, TUrbos, and GT3/GT3RS/GT2 are somewhat noticeable.

Anyways, the GT-R doesn't look THAT bad (although I do like the R34 styling better):

I see where you're coming from, Nuker, the nose of it does have a bit of the 350Z's look but it's "chiseled" (as you put it) in the right way IMO. I hated the look of the 350Z and this looks better than the 350.

it's quite futuristic looking too.

And anyway, what do you mean just "show" them?
You would say "I bought a 911, here it is" and they might be impressed or they might not be.
If they aren't as impressed then you may end up trying to say why your 911 is better than the others. I just see a lot of 911s around and I'm just not as impressed by them as others might be.
I consider them to be in the 'lower-end' of the exotic car market. They're cheaper than a Lamborghini, Ferrari, Maserati, Bugatti, etc. And because of their price range, there are a lot of slightly-better-off people around who will probably own one. Hence why they are common.

Oh, my bad. I presumed that any skyline that didn't have a GT-R model was labeled with a "V", since the G35 in USA, or the Skyline in Japan, is the V35 model, so my bad.

However, the engine used in the R30 or R31 is not the RB26DETT (aka the 2.6 liter inline 6), the ones fitted to R30s and R31s were 2.0 liter inline sixes for the most part. The GTS-R used the RB20DET-R, so yeah, it's an inline six, but it ain't the legendary RB26DETT. Only the GT-Rs from R32s through R34s have the RB26DETT.


Nuker, the reason that i posted the 300ZX is because there is no such car as the 300Z, so i assumed you forgot to put in the X in the name. But instead, you replaced the 5 with the 0. Anyways, the 350Z doesn't look much like the new GT-R:

Not realling getting that equation boidy...

I'd describe it as just:
350Z+R34=okay looking (IMO better 350z, but worse than the R34), ridiculously fast car (relative to the price).

I really don't see where the 300ZX comes into the equation.

Between the 350Z and the Skyline:
Has a body inbetween the low, sleek coupe of the skyline and that tall and short (which means ugly IMO) of the 350Z
Tailights of the R34
Rounded back end of the 350z (yeah, the R34 had a straight back end that i liked)
Headlights similar to the 350z, but more agressive looking (more angled) so they look more like the agressive headlights of the R34
Twin turbocharged like the R34s RB26DETT
V-6 like the 350Z (similar bore too, 3.5 liter vs. 3.8 liter)

THe list goes on and on.

The A, B, and C-pillar of the GT-R and the 350Z are virtually the same. The sloping line of the hood, and the rounded corners, not to mention the fact that the flanks and rocker panels are close to identical. The rear deck, save for the taillight design is what keeps the GT-R different from a 350Z trim level. What I'm saying is that Nissan's development team for this car simply did not have the drive to go further with their design. It's too plain-Jane, and sitting next to the super cars it's purposed against, the competition just simply outweighs this remake. Maybe not in performance, but on sheer looks alone, I think I'd pass this car by.

The rims and brake caliper combo, and the taillights are the only parts that scream "hey I'm a Skyline". The rest of it says "I'm just a 350Z re-stenciled". Unfortunately for Nissan, the latter phrase screams louder than the first.

Go on liking the car if you want, I'm not discouraging you, but Nissan really messed up when they just based the design off the 350Z and not completely off the last generation Skyline.

Well, I have to agree that if they based the new GT-R off the old Skyline (R34, not the V35/V36 current Skylines in japan (the Infiniti G series in America)), i'd like it a lot more. I think the GT-R has strayed too far past the original. THe original being a normal sedan, fitted with a better engine as well as more agressive styling. It'd also be nice if they also kept the SKyline in the name of the GT-R.

BTW, I'm just praising the GT-Rs performance numbers for the most part, as beating the 997TT is no easy feat.

The same fate has befallen the Viper convertible. It used to be known as the Viper RT/10, now it's simply the SRT/10. Why car companies stumble in these areas is beyond me. People will still call the SRT/10 a Viper, as people will still call the GT-R a Skyline. I guarantee it.
