Should have posted Phantom earlier.
The Phantom of the Opera 9/10, I love the casting in this and its great to see the actors enjoying themselves while singing. Gerard Butler is underrated actor and singer.
Airplane 8/10, Nothing like a good spoof movie, was great fun, gotta love the puns.

Eastern Promises 8/10 Though the story is somewhat cliche for a gangster movie, the actors give an excellent and convincing performance. Plus I haven't seen any good movies about Russian mobsters. And Viggo Mortensen is in as well.

Goodfellas: Well, if ever the were an epic movie about Gangsters that was not The Godfather , then it was this. With an epic cast and spanning a lifetime, as well as being based on a true story, this movie doesn't relent and doesn't disappoint. Perfect, aside from being a little difficult to fathom towards the end. Plus it looks fantastic in Blu-Ray. 9/10

What an awesome movie, AJ. The real person that the main character in the movie was based off of wrote a book, which I recently read. An awesome read if you were a fan of the movie.
I recently saw Wall-E, and man, was I surprised! Despite the fact that the main characters are robots, the movie truly captures human emotion, resulting in a really touching film. A solid 9/10 from me.

Felt more like a weird fanfiction crossover than a sequel to the original, with random fantasy characters acting as villians instead of, well, villians from the comic.

Gotta disagree a bit there mate - simply put there's an awful lot of Pan's Labyrinth to Hellboy 2, with all of the odd creatures etc. However, some of them are suited to the movie, and a few, are not - should the director have cut a few back it would have been great. Sadly it switches between Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth a lot, too much for my liking. However, the acting is solid, as is the script, and I've seen far worse from sequels, especially from ones with such a poor predecessor. 7.5/10

Total Recall
There was a load of arnie films on ITV2 recently and I couldn't miss this. Its also funny how much ratings have changed, this was an 18 in 1990. Now it would be a 15, and not a very violent one at that. Great plot- if a little confusing, good acting and its just a joy to watch. 9.5/10.

Rambo 4: 4/10
This is an example how you can really destroy a classic movie series with a really messed up sequel. What made the first movie cool was the good action, stealthy kills and stuff like that. This movie doesnt have any cool combat. In teh original it was cool to see Rambo picking up a group of cops one by one in a somewhat unrealistic but cool way...in Rambo 4 its quite different. Its just a dozen of scenes in which people somehow misteriously get the limbs blown off with a single bullet (or even better yet getting decapitated and their bodies flying 20 meters when being shot from a sniper rifle). And even more retarded is when he placed the claymore... instead of a ordinary AP mine going off we see a bloody nuke blow up instead. And the acting was way below average...imagine Arnold Schwarceneger acting in a drama and divide that quality by 10 and thats how bad it is.
This series ended up just like Rocky (1st movie great, 2nd also good, 3rd aint bad but aint good enuff, 4 is a bit over the line.....though in Rocky we still got the 5th movie which is crap and I havent watched the 6th movie so I cant comment it)

Body of Lies 10/10 One of DiCaprio's better movies. Lots of action and Leo's Arabic is pretty flawless. I could connect very well with the whole plot line as the way things are treated is quite similar to how things happen in Beirut.
Righteous Kill 8.5/10Some really solid acting by both DeNiro and Pacino and the plot twist hit me in the face like a mofo. Was a bit boring sometimes though and I expected a little more to be honest.

Time to rate one of my favourite sci-fi movie series of all time, now that I did a bit of a "marathon" of them
.
Alien - 8,5/10
An utter classic. This movie is quite long but extremely suspenseful from start to finish, and is arguably still the most macabre of the whole series. Everything in the movie seems to be done so carefully, it's as if they left nothing to chance. Brilliant work by Ridley Scott here.
Aliens - 9,5/10
One of the few sequels in existence that is undeniably better than the original, this has to be in my top 10 of all time. Relentless action thrown into the mix with the extremely atmospheric, fantastic film work of James Cameron, this marks the very core of the whole series. This movie is pretty long as well, especially the director's cut edition, which is worth the effort to acquire.
Alien3 - 7/10
Loathed it was when first produced, the third installment consists of misery piled upon misery and is easily the most dramatic in the series. Unfortunately, I don't like drama, nor the somewhat deeper messages that Finch put into the movie. Regardless, as much a black sheep as it is, the movie still lets you know it's part of the Alien series, which is a merit by itself.
Alien: Resurrection 8/10
The most bizarre of the series, this part suffers a bit from the omission of "The Company", Weyland-Yutani, which is part of the flavour of the series IMO. Nonetheless this is one of the most action-packed installments of the series, even if it lacks the atmosphere that makes part 2 so good.

It's been yonks since I've last seen the second Alien movie. That's the one iwth the space marines, right? Heh, at the time that movie was made, being a space marine was actually a serious and respectable job unlike today where all you need to do is chainsaw through aliens and bark out supposedly badass one-liners in the face of certain death.

The Fly - 8/10
I finally managed to get this little oldie on DVD
. A short story, not particularly deep, featuring only three characters, but Jeff Goldblum's acting compensates for this in a really eccentric performance. At only 90 minutes this movie will still freak you out since this has to be one of the most warped sci-fi's I've ever seen, and watching this as an eight-year-old is not a good idea, I'm talking from personal experience
. If you're a fan of horror or sci-fi, you should give it a go sometime, if you manage to get your hands on it.

Catch 22 - 5/10
Let me open by saying that my low score shouldn't deter you from seeing this. It's still a classic and is one of the more powerful war films you're likely to see. Nevertheless I think that it's something you need to see a few times to 'get', and on first viewing, things didn't really hang together all that well. An anti-war film set in an American bomber squadron in the Mediterranean in 1944, it concentrates on the psychological impact of war on its participants. It's hardly realistic - in fact it some cases it's downright farcical in some of the blackest humour you're likely to see - and this semi-surrealism, at least at times, can make it extremely difficult to work out what's going on. Again, if you see it, don't pass it by because of this review; it's likely to stick with you for a while, and for very good reason, but it's not exactly entertainment in almost any sense of the word.

The Fifth Element - 8,5/10
Inspired to watch it by the ZF-1 clip on FS in the Crazy Mod forum, I went into this with high expectations. Gary Oldman's performance is quite great (other actors put in a good performance as well) and the movie is quite amusing ^^ . I must say I found it ending rather abruptly, even though the movie lasts for two hours. But the story is entertaining, funny, and well executed. Also, Jovovich plays a badarse girl again - it's what she does best, it seems
. One or two good soundtracks in this movie, as well, though the other ones weren't particularly special.

Quantum of Solace: Bond is still as bad as ever, but a little more suave. With the transition from complete badass to seducer, Daniel Craig shows some more emotion as Bond, and is right at home with the feel of the character. The storyline is also very good, and all the more poignant is the fact that the Bolivians did some years ago rebel and oust their president over oil problems. There is at times a little too much action, and loses ground on it's predecessor Casino Royale in that respect. The supporting cast are also very good, with Gemma Arteton providing a very good character, and it is made even more poignant when M speaks to Bond about her later in the film. Olga Kuryenko is also very good, and for once doesn't appear to be a love interest for Bond, and is instead an equal, with similar reasons for getting involved in the current mess.
The only thing that phases me about this movie is that it is somewhat too action-packed, and that considering the technology displayed at MI6,

QoS needed some more Bond-ness IMO. It lacked the stuff that defines most Bond movies.

I think it played it's cards right in that it was a transitional phase from the rugged but loving Bond we saw in Casino Royale to the current seducing Bond everyone is absolutely used to - we saw that new phase in his scenes with Gemma Arterton, but maintained his love for Vesper no matter what - it was always about letting go and becoming emotionally numb. It was neither Casino royal or any other Bond movie, but it was still, in my opinion, an undeniably Bond movie, with just the right stuff that sets it aside from the action genre, without leaving Bond behind. Likely, for all of the uber Bond fans out there, the next movie will be a return to form, with the usual Bondishness about Craig.
EDIT: note, I hated the theme song though. Thought it was dire and made an absolute mess of the credit scene at the beginning.....

I hope the next movie introduces Q. I wanna see some interesting gadgets not some Sony Ericsson with a GPS app. Though I don't want the really weird gadgets that Brosnan got as well (Laser watch???)

I would love to see Q again, but I would also agree that silly gadgets need to be got rid of for good and replaced with the 'at-least-slightly-possible' ones.
Anyways:
Seven Pounds: This movie has been out in the US for a fair while now, but doesn't actually hit the UK cinemas for another week. Nonetheless, I have a friend who's Dad has a screener DVD of it (God knows why) hence I've seen it a bit on the early side. There are two views that can be taken of this movie. Firstly, you can accuse it of playing all of the sentimental weepy cards in the deck, and more besides. It is undoubtedly a rollercoaster for emotions, which Will Smith pulls off brilliantly - but has been widely panned for doing too much of. I for, one don't see it like that - as a good action movie is full of action, so a good drama must be full of drama.... There's not much can be said without giving away a lot of the plot, but suffice to say that there are enough twists and turns to keep you guessing, and certainly enough raw acting talent to keep you glued to the screen, as long as you can appreciate it - if you cannot, which is not necessarily a bad thing, you will likely dislike this movie. For me though, 9/10 - it was worth the watch, and leave you feeling deeply touched at the end of it.

Goodfellas - 9/10
Not exactly my first time watching it, so to speak, but I did get it on DVD only now.
This is one of The Standard Eetalian (sic) Gangster Movies, with others in this category being, for example, the The Godfather series, Casino, and A Bronx Tale. If you look closely, the cast (and background cast!) are almost exactly the same as in other Eetalian gangster movies, too
. The story, an extremely typical setup about a family of ruthless mobsters that start off as demigods owning the world but eventually get into trouble because Joe Pesci is ruthless and careless at the same time and because the mobsters get involved with drugs (the plot's rough outlines are in fact almost identical to those of Casino), is executed extremely well, and is based on a true story of a mobster whose in-movie character provides the first person perspective and narration in a quite compelling way, albeit with a rather irritating voice. Acting by any character can't be said to be any less than outstanding - for fans of the genre this is a chapter in their bible and for others it's 'just' a very good watch.
