W40k: Space Marine.

Space marine

A new title for the W40k series has been leaked across the net, best click the link fast before THQ get their hands on that site.

Reminds me of a cross behind GoW and Assasin's Creed with a Space Marine as the main character, but looks awesome.

Someone at THQ is getting bollocked this morning: a full, developer-commentated video of a new Gears-like Warhammer 40k action game, called Space Marine, has leaked all over the internet.

Advertisement:
As you can probably guess Space Marine is a third-person action affair (where you play as a Space Marine!) and according to the THQ narrator it's all about an "up-close personal, visceral, melee experience."

"It's the first time that the Warhammer license has been done in such an up-close and personal manner," says the anonymous narrator, "where as the MMO and RTS are more of a god-like experience, we want to get up close and personal."

Overkill tokens? Me likes!

The backdrops and the gothic feel of the interiors also seem superb, now that it has been leaked THQ may release more information.

Cinemaction looks pretty good. This might get me involved in this franchise. *rubs chin in an intrigued way*

"Inimate Kill Moment"?? Seriously though that is clearly twisted.

Doesnt this look the same engine DoW II will use?

Neverthless the stuff looks awesome

That was sick, me likely. Hope it's for PS3 as well. |8

It looks good, I get the feeling the animated death sequences may begin to annoy me after a while.

Necrophilic aspect to the game perhaps? |8

@ TehKiller
Same engine as DoW II? :P
Isn't that impossible considering this is a TPS and DoW II is an RTS?

On a side note, it may look pretty, but I'm hoping this doesn't go down the Firewarrior path.

Interesting game. I'll keep on the lookout.

Gears of war ripoff but yea. Looks interesting.
Also couldn't they pick a better name?

It is wanting to get into the whole Gears of War theme, which admittedly I don't mind seeing as Warhammer 40k is all about that. Even though its way too early to judge the game, I really don't like how they have their little cut-scenes for finishing moves. Rather than having the camera pan around to a specific shot I would had loved it to be all real time and not be a movie. I can see this becoming very annoying and repetitive after a while even if you added 100+ animations and would be better executed (imo) if they just these same animations run in real time like Devil May Cry, God of War, Gears, etc. A good thing I spot already is that they'll have some neat environments with beautiful graphics and some scripted events which will make the presentation of the game very nice to anyone who glances at it.

Aside from those little technical issues (like the gun randomly shooting downwards with its muzzle flare as a still image) it's something you'd expect from an early build. I just hope they change their mind on their "cinematics" that will halt gameplay flow and just fix those little bugs to make this game worthy of high scores.

So far it looks like a rental, but at least we can be assured it will look nice whether or not the final game differentiates from this current build.

I loved the last kill sequence at the end. Stabs the Chaos Marine and then stomps on the other dude's head.

All I could do was sit in awe of the game. It's just a first "build", but it's pretty awesome for a first go. Only thing that I can see that's really "wrong" with it that the Chaos Marines just sort of sit there and wait to be dismantled. The Cultists are the only ones (though they are much poorer shots than Orkz) doing much of anything. They're the ones that are constantly shooting.

Great idea with Thunderhawks and Imperial Vultures flying around in the background. Very nice touch and paying attention to the lore with the layout of cities and the design of them.

I do have one question though. What chapter does the marine you're playing belong to? What legion do the Chaos marines belong to? Just some minor things, but it's nice to know who you're fighting for and against.

Well it being so early in development might be why they don't have very good AI yet.

I know, that was pretty sweet.

His armour looks blue to me, but I'm not aware of the whole lore of 40k.

It eh looks pretty cool.

I know the marine's armor is blue (to be technical, it's navy or midnight blue), which makes me think it's a pre-heresy Alpha Legion. The Chaos legion colors and general ornamentation have me thinking Word Bearers, but the skull on their left shoulder bears elements of the Iron Warriors. If anything, I'll be very interested in finding out these small details.

Man they throw around alot of phrases "Orchestrating your ballet of death" <- seriously?

Looks great though :P
Hope you can join massive battles
Rather than battling with a few enemies at a time, move to next room, repeat with ever increasing emenies, boss

Only thing that I can see that's really "wrong"

is the fact that the bolter is largely used as an smg to 'stun enemies for the kill'... Bolters are meant to be handheld rocket launchers, they'd rip a guardsman in two with a single shot.

Correct me if I'm wrong but you can't be pre heresy and fighting against Chaos Marines can you?

I was thinking more Ultramarines tbh, though they are subtly different.

I was thinking perhaps Crimson Fists, but due to the quality of the video, I can't get a good look at his hand.

It would be good if you could choose the chapter you wished to be. The bolter is deliberately weak, so that you get that visceral, in your face experience they keep talking about.

While the cinemaction looks good, it will get a bit repetitive. Hope its optional so I can turn it off once I have seen every move 20x. Unless they are going for POP style combo's, in which case I don't think I would get bored :P

Quite the opposite... this aint SAGE we are talking about this is a totaly different engine. Look at Source for example...we got RTS and FPS games on the engine so I dont see a reason why shouldnt the CoH engine be able to run on a FPS game
Quote

CommanderJB's Photo CommanderJB 19 Sep 2008

Believe it or not, SAGE itself is a derivative of the Westwood3D or W3D engine that powers Command and Conquer: Renegade and the independent Red Alert: A Path Beyond, so it's more than possible. Just reasonably unlikely, and requiring a lot of work.

taken alot of ideas from gears or war but it fits the warhammer universe so no complaints especially if this is just alpha screens we could be looking at another great TPS
