When i unwrap my models (Modify->unwrap uvw->edit) something seems to be wrong with the number of polys.
I unwrapped a complicated modle with at least 15 faces and i saw only 3. What did I do wrong?
i tried painting such a skin and it seems that some faces are just represented by a line.

Bonus question: Why are my skins pink ingame?

if ingame a model shows up pink, the game cannot find the texture.

this is how the randomly coloured skin looks like on the model. front and back are skinned, while the sides get no skin. Why is the front and the back the same? And where are the faces for the sides?
edit: i found some movable dots, do i have to puzzle my oblect on my own or can the skin be auto generated?

To UV map properly, you need to do this:

1. Click the "Select Face" button at the upper right corner under your modifiers list.

2. Select the parts you want to UV map. (Just one side will do. You would need to do it slowly one by one and not select everthing at once.)

3. Scroll down at your right options window to find "Planar Map". Click it.

4. Look for the "Edit" button (you probably know where it is) to begin editing.

Yea, this is 3ds Max, not Gmax, but it is similar enough. Hope I didn't miss anything. :o

Gah dont use gmax when you can use 3ds max to unwrap for gods sake!
Its about a million times easier to unwrap in 3ds max, ask JJ where to get 3ds max 8 from :P

Don't use planar mapping per side! Use box mapping for the entire object, it is far less painful.
I will make you guys a UV mapping guide/tutorial when I get to my six week break.

I got the trial version of 3ds max now. So far i can make a picture of the skin and paint it nice etc.
But i got still some questions open:
1. How do i load the skin and get it onto the mesh?
2. How do i get those faces which are at the back\bottom of the piece of the model?
Atm i can just unwrap the top\Front
3. How to get the skin to the game? My earlier attemps resulted in pink skins, because the game didnt find them.
