"No! No! No!" The Doctor shouted as the TARDIS's lights faded, leaving him in dark. The Doctor yelled gibberish as he punched, kicked and smacked the TARDIS to try and get it to work. "Oh come on, this cannot be happening!" Another kick to the controls brought didn't bring the TARDIS back online, but it did make the Doctor curse in pain and hop on one foot.

"No use standing the dark here, might as well go out and see where am I." He grinned, traveling alone without any companions have made him develop some strange habits - like talking to himself. He opened the doors and squinted as blue sunlight pierced his eyes which was suddenly blocked out by the head of a man with a very large peaked cap, visors and a lab coat standing in front of him looking at him quizzically.

"Look! A man has appeared! Stop the experiments!" He shouted, as the 'Sun' behind him dimmed and the Doctor found himself once again in the dark. "By all the Saints, what are you doing here? How did you end up here? This is...impossible!"

"Oh, you know....just passing by, doing some traveling, got lost and decided to take a break here!" The Doctor replied in his usually cheerful voice. "Say, where am I? And what day is today?"

"Are you sure you haven't suffered from a concussion or lost your memory? Mr..." The man in the lab coat trailed off, wondering how to address this strange man.

"Call me The Doctor." He grinned.

"Doctor Who?"

"Just...The Doctor. I'm sorry, but you are?" The Doctor grinned again, finding it very funny that there's at least one guy in every single place he has visited to ask that.

"Right, where are my manners? I am Professor Wilhelm Richmann." He reached out to shake The Doctor's hand, raising his other arm to take look at his watch. "You're in Sudan, Kurmuk to be precise. I'm the head of this Research Institute." He gestured to the equipment behind him, although is peaked cap blocked most of the Doctor's view.

"Earth?"

"Of course Earth, where else who we be? Mars?" The Doctor laughed but Richmann carried on. "Today's Wednesday, 6th of January."

"Which year?"

"2021."

"Oh righto. Say, what have you got there?" He pointed at towards the variance devices in the lab, brushing past Richmann as he stepped past him, put on his glasses and inspected the first piece of equipment in front of him" Oh! A resonant transformer, haven't seen one of these things in ages!" he declared quite enthusiastically, tinkering with it.

"Well yes, it's actually a Tesla Coil, we're trying to direct the bolts of lightning onto different targets."

"Organic or Inorganic?" The Doctor frowned as he put back down what he now released was a early prototype of a weapon.

"But Doctor, you are not authorised to touch these things! They're very dangerous!" Richmann looked on as the Doctor went to and fro, inspecting everything he can find like a child in a toy shop.

"Fascinating, humans in this Universe seems to be much more advanced in some aspects..." The Doctor waved the sonic screwdriver around, scanning the technology for anything alien but found none. He placed the primitive laser rifle down - it was marked with a 'Made in the USA' stamp.

A door slammed in the distant and the sound of heavy boots hitting the catwalk was heard approaching.

"Quick! You must hide! The General is coming!" Richmann panicked as he looked to a fro. "You must hide! Come on!" Picked up a sandwich, a flask of tea and The Doctor's coat, he dumped them into his arms. "Hide back inside your box, take my lunch! I'll deal with him."

Wow. Um, not a combination I'd have picked! Nicely executed though, I look forward to reading more.

I can hear David Tennant in the Doctor's text, very well done, though he is more likely to throw a weapon than put it down. I am interested in how this continues.

The Doctor stared at the interior walls of the TARDIS as Richmann slammed it shut, still holding his folded jacket and a flask of tea in one hand, while his other hand held a neatly packed lunch labeled as a 'Sandvich'. Unwrapping the lunch, he took a bite as he pressed his ears against the wall.

"...I don't know sir! It just magically appeared during routine experiment on the Project! It appears to be empty sir!" Richmann's voice was strained, he spoke each word very quickly and very loudly, as if afraid the Doctor didn't hear what the commotion was about.

"Then I command you to open it!" Another voice, cold but neither loud nor harsh in a tone that implied not following his orders would result in being executed. It reminded The Doctor of a Dalek, cold, calculating, stripped of humanity.

"I tried, I can't! It appears to be sealed, sir!" Richmann replied back, his voice straining as he pushed and pulled with all his might to try and open the TARDIS door, which hasn't given so much as a an inch in response to the poor man's effort.

The Doctor looked at the sandwich but found none, he just finished it. "Aw, I kinda enjoyed pickled herrings..." he mumbled as he crumpled the wrapper into a ball and poured himself some tea when he heard Richmann scream outside.

"General! No!" He yelled as the sound of semi-automatic fired filled the air. "Sir?"

"What is this? Not a scratch?" The man asked. "You! Private give me your Abakan!" The sound of the rifle firing filled the air until every last round on the private was fired and only the sound of the casings rolling around as Richmann fidgeted with his feet can be heard. "This is very interesting Richmann, good work. Continue with the project, I will report this back to Moscow tomrrow morning. A squad of Shock Troopers will be hear move it to warehouse 42 for the night until we can secure it to Moscow. Is that understood Richmann?" the tone daring the poor man to say no.

"Yes sir, General Aleksandr." Richmann whispered, probably still slightly deaf from the sound of the gun fired next to him standing there.

The distinctive sound of boots stomping on the metal catwalk can be heard as the General and his guards left and the room once again was silent.

"All Clear, Doctor, you can come out now." Richmann knocked on the TARDIS door. "For God's sakes Doctor you worried me! I thought the bullets would've punctured your box for sure, but it seems like your box is...one of a kind."

The Doctor grinned. "No harm done, no holes, I'm fine." He gave the TARDIS a good pat on the door and turned around, as if Richmann needed proof that he really hasn't been riddled with bullets. "So, This General Aleksandr, who is he?"

"He is in charge of this...facility, testing out new weapons and such. He thinks he's a God or something, we've got the nation's greatest minds, disaffected and closely guarded, mind you...but still great minds! But he treats us like dirt, to him I'm just a glorified electrician." Richmann stared at the ground. "He says the weapons here will change the face of warfare, but to be honest I couldn't give a damn about the Federation as long as I can feed my wife and kids." He smiled as he took a picture of his family out to share with The Doctor, a bitter smile that the Doctor has seen on so many faces in his past.

"There's always one, isn't it?" The Doctor sighed.

"One what, Doctor?"

"One crazy man with a ego the size of the bloody Sun, that's what! Thinking that they can change the Universe," The Doctor snapped his fingers. "Just like that! Say Richmann, tell me what you're working on?" The Doctor asked as he continued to flip through the lab equipment, inspecting everything and turning things upside down.

No answer.

"Richmann?"

"Doctor, I think you better turn around." Twenty well armed men in gas masks and wielding heavy weapons were staring at him, their weapons pointed directly at him. An officer, who The Doctor presumed to be General Aleksandr was looking at him quite smugly.

"Empty, you say...Richmann. The Federation will have you pay for your treachery for bringing this traitor here!" Aleksandr declared quite proudly, he then turned to the Doctor "You! Identify yourself!"

"I am...Doctor John Smith from the University of...St. Petersburg." He smiled as he fumbled for his physcic paper, giving it to the General. The General reached out, grabbed the paper and frowned.

"Lies! This is nothing but a blank page. Did you think a blank page can fool me? Men, bring these two to the holding cell." Aleksandr threw the psychic paper onto the ground and glared at The Doctor. "We will interrogate this man, tomorrow."

"So, this paper. It's blank." Richmann concluded as he fiddled with the paper. "There's nothing there, are you sure you're not...crazy?" He tossed the paper back at The Doctor, sitting opposite of him inside a small prison van.

"Well, maybe I am and maybe I'm not, but that's not the point. But why is it...Hey! That's my TARDIS! They can't do that!" The Doctor struggled against the chains to get a better look, as he saw the familiar blue box being carted away the back of a truck.

"I don't understand, it's just a box.." Richmann shrugged.

"It's a TARDIS!" The Doctor corrected him.

"Right, what's the TARDIS?"

"Well, just...well..it's complicated, think of it as...a spaceship."

"What? A wooden box? A spaceship?" Richmann asked again only to see the Doctor nodding back. "Well I suppose if you say so, I mean...no ordinary wood can be undamaged by bullets...and lightning."

"Lightning? What do you mean lightning? You mean that blue ball of light? Back at your lab?" The Doctor asked, his interest perked as he leaned in to listen what the Professor had to say above the noisy truck engine's roar.

"Well, we were experimenting with electrical energy and this one time..." Richmann looked around, as if checking for eavesdroppers "Some sort of...vortex formed and sucked in two of the Shock Troopers, they came back a few months later...in Cardiff, unharmed but having no memory of where they were."

"Cardiff, as in England? You mean you also have a Cardiff..." The Doctor rubbed his chin as he stared at the roof, trying to piece all the information together. "These troopers, what happened to them afterwards?"

"Well, they were sent back to training, of course!" The Doctor sighed but Richmann continued. "At the Stanislav Bunker in Siberia, I think don't remember much about them. They were all pretty much classified until they put me in charge of a EMP warhead for their guns."

"So, what is this project about, never really understood what you're trying to do with all that." The Doctor leaned in closer, the rattling of the truck causing the Doctor to fall off his chair."

Richmann grinned a little as he looked at the Doctor on the truck floor. "Ball-lightning, Doctor. To try and replicate and weaponize the affects of Ball-lightning. Stop me if I'm not making any sense, but we were trying to see if we could...project it or somehow direct it."

"Fascinating, so tell me how this.." The Doctor stopped as he stared outside the window, where a soldier, gas mask and gun pointed at the van stared back. "Oh hello!" The Doctor smiled and waved, the Storm Trooper didn't wave back.

"Say Professor Richmann, have you ever seen them without their gas masks?" The Doctor asked as Richmann turned around to see he was waving at.

"I don't know, actually. No, never. They always seem to have that gas mask on, even at night they'd still be marching around with that thing on." Richmann scratched his head, pondering why he's never found it strange before. Oh, the van door is opened, I guess we get off here."

"So, what's with you people..." The Doctor trailed off as he got off the van and waved his hand in front of the gas mask. "Do you eat with that thing on? I mean seriously, doesn't it get hot in there?"

"We do not eat. We do not sleep. We do not feel temperature fluctuations." The man replied in a voice devoid of emotion.

"You don't sleep, you don't eat? But that's impossible!" Richmann pointed at the Shock Trooper. "All humans must sleep and eat...just as much as a human have emotions and...things!"

"Our emotions are removed. Our decisions are logical. We will follow our commander's orders without fail. We will survive through conquest and we will emerge victorious."

"Fascinating, they're just like..."

"Cybermen? Comrade Doctor?" The Doctor turned around. "The Federation's greatest secret, broken by The Doctor, a glorified electrician and a few stupid questions, oh you are good Doctor, you are good." General Aleksandr paced around and patted the shoulders of the Shock Trooper. "Congratulations Doctor, you have found our greatest secret and now, we will imprison you to make sure you will not stop us. Guards, restrain him and oh, take his sonic screwdriver."
