Hi, i thought i would post this up incase you didn't already know or needed a soloution...
The new Microsoft windows os "Vista" Is not 100% compaitible, normally when loading
3ds max 9 with vista you will get an error "dxdds.bmi failed to initialize" max will still work but with viewport glitches, which are very annoying!
There is now a soloution
update your graphics card (if there is any updates)
update your DirectX
and
either get 3ds max 9 productivity booster extension (cost money)
or you can DOWNLOAD FREE 3ds max 9 SP2 patch for vista from autodesk website(recomended)

Once installed, you can now run max with no "dxdds.bmi failed to initialize" error, but! When loading max your computer will automaticaly tuen off windos aero and change your os theme to "Vista BASIC" but changes back to what ever you had before when you are finished and have closed max.
