That movie thing is really obvious with a bit of maths. Given that x is the number you choose, the end result is:

3(3x+3) = 9x+9 = 9(x+1)

The catch here is that no matter what you choose, it will always be a multiple of 9. Multiples of 9 happen to have the property that if you add the digits together, you get another multiple of 9. And these cases in particular (18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81, 90 for numbers 1-9) show that adding the digits together always gives 9 exactly.
