and at least here it feels way different back then. aside from technology improvements, maybe also because it's before the mass revolution on 1998 back then. if I need to make a list of the differences it would be really long.

but had to admit our childhood is in different era than now.

nah. it's 1995's 2030. US not even using old ancient weapons like humvee, abram, A10, and chinook anymore even in TD time.
also try to pick 70's~90's scifi that have set in year 2000's and compare with this last decade.
