Over the past week or so I have been experiencing huge amounts of lag on my PC, so much so that most programs stop responding the moment I click on them. I can't find a reason why this lag is occuring, no programs are using excessive or even above-normal amounts of memory. The lag can last up to several hours, and then just completely stop, again for no apparent reason. Last night, I left my PC when I went out, and when I got back I had a black screen with "Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter". I restarted and everything seemed to be working fine, then after hours of using it I suddenly get a BSoD and seconds later it restarts with the same message. I restarted again, and imediately ran a virus scan, but not long after that, it happened again |:

Anyone got any ideas?

I predict someone will ask for a HijackThis log, so here it is:

Bob it doesn't seem like you have a software problem. My guess is that your BIOS is having trouble with the HDDs or possibly a RAID controller. You should run a memtest and a scandisk I would say.

Alone for the fact of using Internet Explorer instead of Firefox you should have dozens of viruses already. Probably it is because you have a spyware on your pc. For now save your most important and semi most important files external and run some security check ups. Try to install a virus scanner and a spy ware scanner on a stick which can be locked, update it and lock it, than run it through, it will with 90% possibility find something. Else I cannot help you much sadly.

hm, Vista... and your problem is excessive memory usage... how strange? :sly:

well at first sight it looks like disk/file system failure. pray to god its no hardware error.
(also check if the hdd doesnt get too warm while the pc is running, since that may cause stuff)

i´d suggest to perform a scandisk (windows built in), and then again with some hdd scan tool that actually detects stuff.
like, O&O. (get the free trial)

Well Scandisk is managed by Windows.
Try downloading this memtest iso and burn it. Then run as a boot disk.
Hopefully, it ain't too serious a hardware problem.

I myself would use the memtest that comes with GRUB and Ubuntu when needed.

Do you know what the BSOD said? The code is pretty important. Also check your event viewer.

If it is something nasty then I'd recommend the usual Spybot + Avast combo.

If not, then just do your usual windows updates and stuff... Ideally though move to Win7 over Vista, Vista is naturally quite laggy.

I started the scandisk last night (after finding out it had been moved in vista :sly:). It was getting late so I let it run while I went to bed, periodically looking over to see if it had finished, needless to say I ended up falling asleep before it did :P. It seems to have stopped on stage 4, last time I looked before I fell asleep it was at 140000 of 340656 this morning it's at 145025 of 340656... is it worth letting it carry on, or is it likely to take several years to complete? D;

@Ion: Unfortunately no. Both times (that I was here) I wasn't actually using it at the time, I just saw the blue screen in the corner of my eye, and by the time I had turned around it was already restarting. :D

EDIT: I am using my laptop atm in case anyone is wondering |8

Don't miss the simplest thing, check heatsink for dust and clean it up.

Check temperature before and after cleaning and post it here.

Check the heatsink/fans for dust, clean it up. your problem can be also due to thermo throttling and overheating.

Check temperture with software like Everest and post it here.

Send me a PM if you can't find Everest.

well maybe try to find out how to disable automatic system restart after BSOD on Vista, so you can actually read them.
(if that "feature" isnt just in ultimate :sly: )
scandisk being that slow isnt really a good sign tbh >_>
try an advanced tool, like that O&O thingy, or something from a different manufacturer. they´re a LOT faster, and usually dont die on bad sectors that easy.

I have no idea how to do that.

EDIT: I am guessing you meant the O&O defrag? It has it's own check disk thing that I am running now (it wasn't working before, which is why I asked, since i thought i had the wrong one)

Download this file and burn it to a disk. Restart the pc with the disk still inside. The test should automatically run.

If the scandisk is giving you trouble, it could be your HDDs that need fixing. How old is your desktop btw?

It's about 10 months old.

I finished the O&O version of the Check Disk and I didn't get any errors or a report or anything... I assume that is a good sign?

There is even a tab called reports

Anyway, the report says Status: successful... I'm guessing that is a good sign..? D;

I tried that memtest thing, but nothing happened :P. My PC is currently running perfectly fine, so I am taking this time to back up some stuff, before the lag starts again, then I will try that memtest thing again.

well basicly that means nothing, except the last few lines that worry me.
either its some bug there, or that scan went through 350GB of nothingness. (total files/dirs 0)

actually i´m missing something about bad/damaged sectors. like, find something there...

Try and get a HD diagnostic from the HD manufacturer. They will also repair damaged sectors if they exist - if you specify it. Careful you don't wipe your drive though.

repairing bad sectors is a twisted thing... >_>
it works, no doubt. but it doesnt stop them from failing again just seconds later. D:
if u gotta bad sector, partition your hdd so the sector isnt in a partition, or if its too many get a new hdd.
