If thats how its intended to work thats still lame. The old system of getting unlocks through achievements was much better, it gave you something to work towards and a sense of accomplishment, now achievements mean nothing.

The problem with the old one is new people don't get any of the unlocks because its just too hard and they don't have enough time.
The second problem is that achievement servers could just be used for the lazy people who can't be bother to play the game properly.

Edit:

Whats worrying me is the new patch (which my Steam doesnt want me to dl for some odd reason and is thus blocking me from playing it) DOES NOT FIX any of the seriously bugged stuff

Its a hard bug to fix, so its likely to take more than one day to fix it.

I know about achivement servers but surely the majority didn't use them? I've played 7 hours as a pyro (My most played class) and nearly racked up the 22 achivements required for the unlocks anyway. Thats really not a long time to need to play to get the unlocks. I blame this lame new unlocks system on casuals, damn counsellors. Stick to your stupid Wii and its mass of crap minigames.

I don't see exactly why valve is a untouchable company than you can only say good things about them

I don't see why this new unlock systems faul is thanks to casuals, blame valve for releasing parts of the system instead of the full system, since the new system its suppose to let you pic variations of the normal weapons and trade them with other players, they just released part of it instead of all, the "people deleting items with no way to get them back" was also part of this system, seems like valve didnt learn any lesson

oh and the ambassador does less damage and is slower firing, but fear not! it can headshot people for...less damage than the standard shot so basically you have no reason to use it

Did I say valve was untouchable? No I didn't. However it seemed to me the new unlock system was because some people thought it took to long to get them the proper way. 7 hours is not a long time. You could play 2hours a week for 3 weeks and get the unlocks. 2hr20 per week if you want to be pedantic.

don't blame casuals, blame valve for releasing a incomplete unlock system and locking some unlocks(spy and sniper) to it with no other way

even if they decided to release it for the bitching of casuals the decision of droping the unlocks with the achivements is theirs

if i cant have it at the start, why i cant have control over what i unlock instead of a dice than seems to be the word of god, this is one of the reason people hate MMORPGs, and they are putting it in TF2

they did a lot of mistakes with tf2 but is valve so its "ok" for most people, like how natasha was broken in the heavy update, they fixed it 3 months after it.......just to release the scout update than broken natasha AGAIN

And here I was thinking I might bust out TF2 again. I think I'll wait...

Its not that bad, people are just over reacting.

No they aint... most of the people dont even know anything about this new system (hmmm prolly due to the fact that theres a whole bunch of a freebies playing at this moment)

also the system needs to be fixed ASAP ( i mean i played on a server today and one guy got 3 unlocks in 15 mins while it took me 2 hours to get a single 1...14 hours for 2 unlocks to be exact)

Yeah the unlock system is a bit broken but the main core of the game is still fine, it shouldn't put you off from playing.

I liked the old unlock system better, gave me a reason to get the achievements and now I don't see the point in them.

The funny thing is that people who are getting them in fifteen minutes are opening the .gcf and changing the unlock chance to 9999999.

I wouldn't do it though, unless you really want VALVe to take your unlocks.

Nah this dude never cheated in his life (i know him). The unlocks he received were pure luck but he was damn jealous when I got the Huntsman :sly:

The update with the coming of a new unlock system has me royally pissed off at how sloooow it's for a person who casually gotten his unlocks to sudden hit a wall in that you have no control over what you're getting.
The mechanic AFAIK is that there's a chance to get a weapon at set intervals, once that chance has been passed, there's another chance to get a new weapon, apparently around 33%. This has gotten me 14 weapons, 8 of which are duplicates (THREE ubersaws, 2 FaNs, 2 Natashas, one KGB), 5 of them are duplicates of new weapons - the cloak and dagger and jarate. The ambassador is the only one untouched, which I have taken to immensely.

The first shot is totally accurate at all ranges, plus it pierces multiple targets. The mini-crit is annoyingly in that it does little damage, 45, but since you only have to wait a miniscule amount of time to reset the accuracy than reload a sniper rifle, you have something that functions a rapid fire sniper rifle that kills 125 hp classes in three hits and takes less than 3 seconds to do so.
The revolver is an amazing weapon with quick reload and decent damage, the thing letting it down is it's spread, that 15% less damage means nothing if you end up killing the enemy in the same amount of hits for precison.

I found about 7 items.

1× Blutsauger (Already had one)
1× Kritzkrieg (Already had one)
1× Übersaw (Already had one)
2× KGB (ALREADY HAD ONE)
1× Razorback
1× The Huntsman

Makes me a bit sad when I see alot of people getting the new items, and I'm stuck getting Medic Items all over the place.

What valve should do right now is to tell us exatly how long you have to play, what are the droprates for items. I hate the new system but I can live with it if I can get facts about it, to know what to do, not just vaguely "play x hours and you MIGHT get an item that you may or may not have yet"
And whose bright idea was it to implement only a part of the new system? They should have kept the old system for now, as everybody wants their new unlocks and after they have the new system all ready, put it to use as a whole, so everything would be working properly. Now it's just annoying to play.

(haven't been able to play for half a week since my game-pc:s harddrive died on me)

It's worst when rumors are surfating about valve bugging the system in purpose so the new players in the weekend can get the new weapons faster, it may be a conspiration theory but after the natasha fiasco i don't know what to think really, if they fix it in this week i am going to assume the conspiration theory is true, but taking into account the alternative is being staked with the new bugged system for months

Hell, i don't know what will the point of the trade system, as the old weapons can still be get by both drops and achivement i don't see the point of it, specially since knowing valve the trade system will be put when everybody and they mother has all the weapons
Quote

Wanderer's Photo Wanderer 25 May 2009

That's what I'm wondering too, what's the point of the trade-system because almost all have them, unless valve is going to put out alot more unlocks

They are going to put random generated guns like you get a natasha but it has less ammo for 100% of damage or a slower sniper rifle than recharges faster

....in the future

still doesnt explain why we are getting cloned items, what are we going to do with them? i am sure something like this will hapen:

Trade KGB for Extra Loaded Shasha
-dude, everybody have like 6 KGB
;_;

ΓΛPTΘΓ's Photo ΓΛPTΘΓ 25 May 2009

Still prefer the older system, not a big fan of random...
Quote

Flechette?'s Photo Flechette? 25 May 2009

When the trading system is implemented, they will have a way to specifically get a weapon you want, it's purely speculation but people say that the level of the weapon will dictate how much you have to trade. i.e sandman is a level 15 bat, you need to swap unlockable weapons that add up to 15 to "buy" it. This doesn't include the gift option that will presumably be introduced at the same time, which lets you outright give them the item.

Giving players a method to influence the system so they can work directly toward getting specific items.

But that doesn't change the fact that this might actually make getting the guns harder as most already have all unlocks so who are you going to trade with? Every time a trade is made, there is one person less to trade with.

So TF2 is essentially going Hellgate London on us all?

That's... kind of cool. Unique items in Hellgate were pretty sweet.

Also, pyro + sniper bow = flaming arrows.
Quote

Amdrial's Photo Amdrial 26 May 2009

Yeah, the only thing with the Flaming Arrow which bothers me is, that when you kill someone with it, it'll show you killed them by flamethrower, which doesn't make any sense.
Quote

TehKiller's Photo TehKiller 26 May 2009

RaiDK the prob is that the items wont be unique
