SHWEET!

In 40 years, we won't need to worry about any of the problems we are describing here.

Which IPS is better: Comcast or Verizon Fios?

In Canada we mainly have Shaw Cable Internet and Telus ADSL

Both are pretty nice Plus it's free installation. All you need to do is wait then plug in your modem.

I honestly don't know of bad connections. I had SBC Yahoo DSL (before it became AT&T for good), it was cheap, and it was reliable (I had 1.5 mbps for a long time and 6 mbps for a short time) until I moved down here to California, which I now use Verizon's DSL connection.

But we're gonna have FiOS here soon (10 mbps downstream is gonna be very helpful).

Currently on Demon, which isn't bad. I'm having more of a problem with the cables that connect my house, which is BT's responsibility.

here in belgium the best there is is Cityconnect by Dommel. you can only be connected if you live in a major city though. but considering that the price is almost the halve of other major ISP's like belgacom or Telenet, there's no download limit (next to the 12 gig for almost twice as much € at other ISP's) and the speed is nice 'n high.

worst must be Scarlet which is slow, unstable, expensive and has a ridiculous bandwidth limit.
it's time to wake up

When I was in Montreal, Videotron offered far better deals than Bell, Telus or Rogers.

With the games of its time :P
Try L4D on a 56k dial-up or the slightly better ISDN lines.

@Fubu, where I am DSL > Cable. Back in Canada though, Cable > DSL. Depends I guess.

Actually its this. The asymmetric bit refers to differing upload speeds. When they are equal its SDSL.

DSL works over the phone line but uses higher frequencies that won't interfere with the landline itself.

Despite what people say, my Virgin Media 20Mbit is actually quite good. I almost never get 20Mbit downloads (2.5 GB of Windows 7 Beta came down at 10Mbit, 700MB of Ubuntu 9.04 came down at 12Mbit a few hours after it was released onto the internet (both of these were P2P, btw)) but that is not VM's fault. Peak time download limit is 3GB before the connection speed goes to 5Mbit but even if overrun the downloads can be just as fast. Can't remember last time there were outages.

I feel sorry for all those who are subject to a monopoly; BT freeing up the last mile in the UK has really made every ISP much better, since customers can leave them en masse if they screw up with anything.

Hughes.net

A Sattlelite ISP. And words alone cannot express my frustration with this service.

It has a bandwidth limit, so after 300MB of downloading, it pretty much slows down to a crawl.

Reliability? well, it was really really terrible when we first had the service, I remember not having internet access for almost a month. But for the past few months it's been doing fairly well.

The price is about... oh $76 a month.

Another thing that kills me, is that I can't play any mulitplayer games because of latency, which is around 1200 ms. I really wish we could get DSL or cable out here but we're just too far from the city for that.

YOU NEVER HAD DIAL UP?!

I feel really old now.

But yeah mine was awful, I knew if it made the wrong sound while dialing up it would cut out within a few mins. A song from kazaa took about a goddamn lifetime to download.

And u had to make sure no-one else was on the line when u were dialing up. You kids have it good these days :P

Ah dial-up, the good old days. :D

15 minutes for 1 MB. :P

And no, I don't plan to return to it anytime soon ever.

Oh, I sure as hell had Dial-Up. For a time, I didn't have a computer at my house, but there was one at my Grandmother's real estate office. IT SUCKED. The internet was Road Runner. I don't remember all the stupid technical specs because I was only 6, but my very first experience with t3h int3rw3b was not necessarily a good one. I won't go into details, but it was shit.

TMNet TMNut, Malaysia's monopolizing ISP, disconnected on me from yesterday evening right up to today afternoon. Technically the best, since there's only one ADSL providing ISP here, all others are wireless, but Malaysians sure hate TMNut. This has something to do with government policies (politics!).

Oh god. I can only imagine in 20 years, there will not only be one big government run healthcare plan, but government internet! I live over in the states, I don't know about the other guys.

What's with AOL?
