Hmm, some friends had beard even when they were 16 so they could get (illegally) a beer.

:) In Austria we get beer legally with 16

I have an electric one. I don't like spending much time on shaving. I usually shave 1-2 times a week. I started shaving when I was about 15.

I'm 17 now and they always ask me for an ID. A friend of mine has a beard. They never want to see an ID from him.

I've been shaving since the age of 16 and started with both. Though at the beginning I prefered the electric razor, because when you're skin isn't used to shaving, you'll get pimples due to rash, caused by skin irritation.

After a half of a year, I switched to non-electric. Why? Because it's a much cleaner shaving and I don't have to shave everyday (shaving against the hairline seems to do a better job with non-electric than with an electric shaver)

Quote

I wouldn't want to shave with it normally - it feels like my hairs are being pulled out by the machine, and it doesn't seem to shave nearly as smoothly as a normal razor can.

With all respect to your grandpa, but when an electric shaver pulls hairs or feels like that way, it means that the razors aren't sharp enough. :)

I use an electric but at the moment I'm growing a bit of a beard, though i do trim it down when it gets too long.
It has been proven to be worthwhile, it makes me look years older (I have a young looking face apparently) and it got me into the movies to watch Inglorious Basterds and I know without it i wouldn't of got in :)

I can't really grow good facial hair yet, despite being 20.5 years old. :)
I use an electric razor hand-me-down to keep the peach fuzz at bay, but nothing grows outside of the bottom of my chin and above my lip. So much for late-blooming, eh?

I love beard ( on my own face ) but since people look at you differently when you grow a large beard, I tend to cut it down from time to time, I prefer to do it non-electricy, hell you need to cut your beard if you want to get in a good job, I hate that rule as much as I hate necktie, I want to have a fucking 1m. beard , leave me alone :(

Me, I usually have a three-to-six-day beard because I'm too lazy to shave regularly. My weapon of choice is an electric razor (Philishave), mainly due to habit and laziness.

@Chyros
You should consider trying a new electric shaver - the old ones are quite crappy and it sounds like yours isn't in good condition.

What the hell...

People, are you telling me that you can't shave yourself without foam/special watery-thingy/sth else?

What's wrong to shave in the way that you take a razor, shave yourself and just get through the shaved area with cold water?

People, you are overcomplicating...

Well, at the age of 19 my hair grows faster than most, and I need to shave every day. I use a Gillette Fusion (iirc) which is a manual razor, and just have a very basic wet shave - water and nothing else. Electric razors I've never bothered with, and while foam is a little handier, I often don't have time anymore.

I don't believe we're saying there's anything "wrong" with the old school approach to shaving, except that it generally takes longer. With an electric razor, there is no preparation time (no water or foam), so the process is simplified and stream-lined. It seems though, that this speed comes at a price and the "move-the-cutting-blade-yourself" is still the most efficient at cutting hairs.

Personally I see electric razors as simplifying shaving, for the reasons I just mentioned.

Moisturizing the skin before shaving reduces your cuts by tenfold and keeps the skin smoother. Worth the extra two minutes I spend. And using gel not foam, I only need a thin layer.

Well it's a Philishave too (a 715, whatever that means) but yes, it's probably not in the best of condition. Like I said though, I'll probably stick mostly with shaving wet. The trimmer thingy on the electric razor will be pretty useful, though.

I don't really need stuff like that but standing in a shower under hot water and using some shower gel as makeshift shaving stuff makes shaving much easier, reduces cuts, and shaves much more thoroughly.

Lol, so true.

One fun fact - people in my region in country (being introvert and dickheads) deem people from insurance companies old enough incapable of doing anything else.

I have never tried an electric razor, so manual for me.
I use a fusion like a lot of you seem to, as well as foam. I also shave every other day or else I look like a total cave man. :)

At 17, I kinda phail at growing facial hair. I'd like it to be thicker. The fact that the hair is white doesn't help either. =P

I shave manually and don't use foam or gel or anything.

In my experience, beards can be itchy, but aren't too bad once you get used to having that amount of fuzz on your face. The main thing is keeping a beard trimmed so it doesn't make you look like a wild man. Beards do tend to itch after strenuous activity. There is one really good side to a beard and that is warmth, at least for the fall and winter months (gentlemen on here that live in cold climates will understand). A shaven face may look better than a beard for some, but once the temperature plummets, a beard is a nice thing to have on one's face.

I use an electric and I do know what you mean by it "almost pulling your hairs out". That experience only happens with me when I let my hairs grow out much longer than just a "5 oclock shadow". Its great if you want to stay clean shaven, or have parts of your face clean shaven.

I use a Gillete Mach 3 Turbo or whatever-the-hell it's called. I only shave like once or twice a year tops, so if you saw me, you'd think you're looking at a homeless person in-training.
Anyways, using that to shave a years worth of beard is a real pain, so I think I'm gonna get me an old-style razor (I think you guys called it a cuthroat or something) and hope I don't slit my throat while shaving (although that probably wouldn't bother me all that much :)).
