I made this thread because more recently I've found myself becoming more attracted to photography as a hobby. Right now I don't have a dSLR or even a pro-ish camera. Just have this Canon Powershot SD 880 IS at the moment. Probably in summer I'll get some entry level dSLR or possibly an interchangeable lens camera (their size is appealing).

Also, I guess any tips would be helpful as well and not the basics like what exposure and aperture are :)

Where's the choice for a phone camera dammit! :)

Wish I had the time, experience and money to do photography properly, but as I have none of the above, I use the crappy camera on the back on my phone when I cba to take it along ;)

Right well you know most of my thoughts :)

But I have a Samsung ST550, Canon 1000D and a very old Japanese SLR that needs a good work over, so I consider myself an enthusiast.

I really can't advise you on the point and shoot side. They are all just as bland. The ST550, however, is a decent camera, easy enough for my wife to use ;) But don't expect stunning panoramas or fantastic macros.

Get an entry DSLR and then annoy the bejesus out of your mates by spending your whole life making sure their exposed 8| and in focus properly.

@Option list: The option for Sony should also include that of Konica/Minolta, seeing as Sony has acquired that company as of late.

I consider myself a bit of an enthusiast, being that I have quite a selection of gear for my Nikon D80 and will be pursuing a degree and eventually a career in the field of photography. The only thing I really lack at the moment, is an assortment of lenses, though as any photographer worth their salt should know, lenses are where the real investment lies. The family has kidded and joked with me about "hiring" me to photograph family events (to which I would happily oblige, free of charge).

Point and shoots can be handy when one needs to quick capture a place or event, but beyond that, they're rubbish. A proper DSLR, even at entry level, is something to honestly consider.

I know that Konica-Minolta is now under Sony but I kept things simple in the poll.
