Well the problem is that his current position does not fit him. with Real Madrid he is somewhat in Sneijders position but naturally that man is the absolute number one.

Though there is something to say for Van Marwijk allowing him to play each time, as his individual quality makes him more versatile than the young Elia. This was shown in his assist and good free kick nearly allowing De Jong to score. However as Robben is back he will probably get an even harder time. Not to mention there is always Afellay, who is also playing quite good and has got good references with Van Persie.
Van der Vaart will always find a good place to be, I guess. He's just like Kuyt, an overall very useful guy you don't have to pin down to a certain position. I still don't think the currently mostly used team is the best ever but there are plenty of chances for everyone to prove themselves. Haven't seen too much of Van der Wiel yet who is IMO one of the most useful defenders out there atm.

Shifting teams, congrats to Japan for making it to the second round. Honda was fabulous and it continues to amaze me how that guy ever could have been signed by VVV (a dutch survival club in the lower regions of the first division. Honda single handedly got raised them up in the division) and now he took the Japs up to the last 16 with a goal and a magnificent assist.

He is one of the few national team stars who actually meets the large expectations. */Honda fan*
Honda was great stuff. He's got a great shot, and isn't narrow-minded like most strikers are. A truly well-deserved victory for Japan :P .

Ja, Japan's two penalty goals were pretty bloody amazing, that ball curved in a way that didn't seem physically possible.

Portugal v Brazil up now. God, I hope the Brazilians win this :P .

By the way, I'm wondering if Lippi has already been assassinated 8| .

Brazil vs Portugal is a massive yawn.

Ditto TPAM. They're either playing it waaay safe, or they're just both too good.

N. Korea seems like it's not even trying to get points. The team that I remembered giving Brazil a hard time seems like a distant memory, perhaps they were all traumatized by the Portuguese.

Portugal is defending the match to death and countering with Ronaldo every now and then. Apart from the brawl during the first half, which is unavoidable in any match with Portugal in it, nothing much is happening now. The ref, even though he gave seven yellows in the first half, was even lenient IMO. Two of those were definite reds, I'd say.

Brazil vs Portugal was not a nice game although Spain vs Chile made up for it.
Everything is building up to England vs Germany :P

First half of Portugal v Brazil wasn't that bad. Though neither team scored, both were playing furiously.

Uruguay v Korea now, and so far 1-0. Hard to tell what's gonna happen, but both teams are obviously playing for the win. Mr. Park #23141 is making some lovely shots here and there.

Tonight US v Ghana, should be interesting. The US doesn't have any good players unlike Ghana who have one or two big names so to speak, but are coordinating quite well. I've bet on Ghana to win, but I think it'll be a very close match, so it should be quite good :P .

On a side note to the Wold Cup

Five Australian soccer fans were among nine people tied up and robbed at gunpoint in a terrifying hold-up in their hotel room following the Australia-Serbia World Cup match in South Africa.

The Nine Network said that one of the female victims was sexually assaulted during the robbery, staged by four armed men at the hotel in Nelspruit.

They were found by another Australian guest, Steve Gaynor, who told Nine that one of the victims, believed to be a member of the Australian Federal Police, had kept the others calm during the nightmare ordeal on Thursday.

Mr Gaynor had found his room had been robbed with about $A10,000 worth of equipment, including his laptop and passport, stolen.

Unlucky for them.

I'm surprised it was only nine people. Considering it's in South Africa, I'm amazed by the lack of crime reports from the football fans so far.

We're talking about the country where people need to live in extremely well-guarded compounds or towers which they never leave here, the authorities have jack shit in terms of authority.

There's not many places robbers shoot you in the face at a crossroads while you're behind your steering wheel to nick your car without so much as a "hands up!", though. You don't get robbed in an alley, you get stabbed twelve times and your wallet taken. I've lived with South Africans for over ten years, and know quite well how extremely brutally criminal the country is.

Also, South Korea equalised :o .

Wow, I go away for a pee for three seconds and Ghana have already scored Oo . Needs replay.

EDIT: the Americans are powerless to control the midfield, but I'm seeing some very big chances appear suddenly at the start of the second half. Ghana only just escaped the equaliser a few times now. EDIT2: just like previous matches, the Americans suddenly play a lot better now that the pressure is on them. Seeing some good play here. EDIT3: and 1-1 after a well-deserved penalty for the Americans! EDIT2391 (reply goddammit): 2-1 in EXTENDED TIME by, who else, Gyan.

US vs. Ghana game was a farce. Taking 3 minutes to get up from a self-inflicted injury, dragging their feet to see who brings the ball in play from a corner kick or throw-in, and the refs not doing a sodding thing about it. At one point the announcers were saying the refs should be keeping Ghana accountable for these acts, yet they clearly weren't. The one penalty the US did get in their favour, was, to be fair, not really a penalty, as the US player tripped over his own feet. Alas, Ghana is through and the US repeats 4 year's history.

Alias's Photo Alias 27 Jun 2010

Welcome to the World Cup.

We copped it from Italy 4 years ago. Since both Italy and Australia are out that can't happen this year.

It will only be more of a farce if Ghana manages to win the World Cup.

Tonight is a another set of interesting matches. The Deutsch versus English, the Argentineans versus the Mexicans.

I think prolly Germany and Argentina's gonna make it out, what do you guys think?
