Trials, full demos, whatever... I'm not sure if this is the place to ask. Also, before anybody says anything, yes, I have googled it up and tried a few free ones, but to no avail.
Thanks a lot guys.

I also tried one shareware program from Sony (I think it's name was Sony Vegas Pro, anyway they have only one program of that kind AFAIK) and I must say that it was very impressive, but maybe a little overcomplicated when you are a neophyte

Nero demo just holds the most basic burning tools, and so does it's trial version... Also, their video editing programs is lame, just as Roxio's (I tried both of them since I had them for free with my OEM PCs)

If not, you could try the new Movie Maker (haven't tried it myself) and see if it's useful.
If your project is a one time thing, try a demo of Adobe Premiere Elements. It's much simpler than the CS5 version.

Indeed. Win 7 is way better now that it is stable
But for the moment just try to upgrade Movie Maker, the new version has more options and handles more formats (Just don't mistake it for Windows LIVE Movie Maker though, that one is a crappy version which can only makes slideshows of your vacation pictures

WMM isn't too bad, an inexperienced user might get all they needed from it.

If you're in university, chances are you can nab a free copy or in a worst case with a juicy discount (at AUB Win7 HP is free while Pro is a $20 upgrade).
Even at school as a student, you could find some cheaper copy of Win 7.

If you upgrade it you will have to download movie maker 2.6, or WLMM, whcih apparently is what you don't want, but I havent tried it myself, I couldn't tell you how good it is.
Here is all the info you need for windows software.

TBH, I've been looking every now and again for decent free software to edit videos for the past 3-5 years, and you won't find it unless you're looking for spyware. Your best bet is seriously to either pay or get WMM.
