Hey guys, I thought I'd like to introduce all of you to an old game I used to play lots, namely Freelancer.

Freelancer is a free-roam Space Simulator which can be considered a sequel to Starlancer, as the plotline, or introduction to the story involves the war between the Coalition and the Alliance and the last ditch effort made by the Alliance to survive by launching five sleeper ships, ships holding the Alliance's people in stasis until a new place to live has been found.

In the singleplayer, you play as Edison Trent, a man who lost everything on a space station accident and who later got involved in the "evil schemes" of an alien species, nicknamed the Nomads, who were capable of taking over other human lifeforms. Their plan? The destruction of mankind from within through political play.

In the multiplayer game however, you start out as "just another pilot", given the same freedom as Edison Trent after his adventures, allowing you to pick your own faction and discover the universe.

Freelancer Discovery is a mod like Shockwave was to Zero Hour, a mod which expands on the content of the game and adding more factions to the game. It adds a new NPC faction called Gallia, the people from the lost sixth French sleepership, which apparently was hushed up by Alliance officials. Let's say the French weren't happy about being totally abandoned by the Alliance. In the current version of the mod, the French have, in secrecy from the other five houses (Liberty, Bretonia, Kusari, Rheinland and Hispania), and are about to overrun both the British (Bretonians) and the Kusarians (Japanese/Asians).
The mod itself is already much to awe upon, but it is the community in-game which makes the game so great to play. The official server of Discovery is a 100% roleplaying server, having 200 player slots and many player factions and independent players representing the NPC factions.

There are also weekly events in-game, such as an all-out battle between Liberty and Rheinland or other smuggling events between pirates and lawful forces.

A few screenshots to show how the game looks like:

and a trailer from the previous version to boot!

I know for one that both Liten and Destiny both play Freelancer Discovery, and for the people who don't own this great game yet, it's quite a buy at for example Amazon ($9,99)

It would be great if we could establish our own player faction or just our own group on the server.

***Freelancer Multi-Mod Install Guide***

Step minus one:
If you don't have the game installed yet, go to step three.

Step zero:
Backup your FL Account ID (It should be somewhere in your EXE directory under the name of myflaccountid.hta)

Step one:
Delete the Freelancer folder content after running the uninstall tool

Step two:
Delete the FL Mod Manager (Back-up the mods in the mods folder if you want to)

Step three:
Install Freelancer

Step four:
Copy the Freelancer Directory to another location (So you have two installations of Freelancer)
I named one of my folders Freelancer Discovery and the other one Freelancer Crossfire

Step five:
Install Freelancer Mod Manager

Step six:
Copy the FLMM Directory to another location (So you have two installations of the FLMM)
I named one of my folders Freelancer Mod Manager Discovery and the other one Freelancer Mod Manager Crossfire)

Step seven:
Copy/Install the Crossfire Mod to one of the FLMM directories
Copy/Install the Discovery Mod to the other FLMM directories

Step eight:
Boot up the Crossfire Freelancer Mod Manager

Step nine:
Under options, click on "Choose a different Freelancer Directory" and select the Freelancer Crossfire folder.

Step ten:
Activate Crossfire Mod 1.81 Client Edition

Steps eleven through thirteen:
Do the exact same thing for the Discovery mod. Don't forget to switch Freelancer Directories before activating.

You could categorize it as an MMO yes, except that it doesn't have the grandeur of another space MMO called EVE Online, nor does it aim to be a free substitute. It's a game in it's own right.

It's hard to kill anyone with a fighter and getting a Liberty Navy ID is hard since the bribe never comes :read: But yeah, this game is kinda fun in itself...

This definitely isnt a MMO...its just a open ended space, uhm, RPG. It just happens to be stable enough for people to have 200 slot servers.

I would give it a shot if I could find me old disc

I got into Freelancer and was pretty into the Freeworlds modification, that was until I met their community player base. Suffice to say, me and two other modders decided it was not in our best interest to help Freeworlds after that. But I hope this is better than that, will have to give it a try.

Bleh, I really really want to get into games like Freelancer and X3, but I can't. Too much stuff, too much grid and too little action.
