Valve has restored access for over 12,000 Steam accounts after they were mistakenly banned from playing Modern Warfare 2.

According to an e-mail response sent to users from Valve President Gabe Newell, and later confirmed to IGN, the company's anti-cheating software built into its Steam service randomly began banning undeserving players over the past two weeks.

"The problem was that Steam would fail a signature check between the disk version of a DLL and a latent memory version," said Newell. "This was caused by a combination of conditions occurring while Steam was updating the disk image of a game."

Along with an apology, Valve has also given those affected a free copy of Left 4 Dead 2 along with an extra copy to give to a friend.

Mistakes happen and Valve is quick to apologize and give out free stuff. Overall a good example of how to fix problems.

Agreed. Glad to see that Valve were quick to accept responsibility for the problem and fix it. Mind you the hand out of 2 copies of L4D2 to 12,000 is going to cost them a over half a million quid (well it won't really, cost price of the game is less than half the RRP, but you get the point).

Not many corporations would say that it was their fault and then give you free stuff as a compensation.

A company actually had the balls to admit they were wrong and change it :O
Seems like a pretty good way of saying sorry :P

It's not just VALVe saying "Hey guys, look, we're really sorry and the fault is completely ours. We're going to correct the issue and give you a gift." This maneuver can be seen as simple P.R. to keep those who were effected buying games from VALVe or Steam. Sure it doesn't hurt at all that VALVe made a public apology and stood behind their product. That, is the test of a good company. The 2 free copies of L4D2 though, that was a P.R. stunt (but hey, I'm not knocking free swag :P).

Wow, I'm actually surprised that they firstly screwed up the bans, but compensated people for their own faults :P

I wouldn't at all be surprised if they banned them on purpose and then gave a shitload of copies away just to boost their PR.

Besides, why does VAC try to ban MW2 players anyway, the only used hack in MW2 is a VAC bypass so VAC can't do shit anyway.
