I blew my harddrive?

logical2u's Photo logical2u 05 May 2006

Ok, so most of you don't know me.

Nor care about my problems.

But whatever...

Over the last 3 weeks, I've been in the process of upgrading my computer. How so, you ask?

Well, originally I had an MSI 478 Pin AGP board, with 533 FSB. So I took a 2.8 GHZ P4 Processor, supposedly 533 FSB, to get installed.

Weeks of work, and failure. The board had a FSB of slightly above what I could handle on that motherboard. So they put my old 1.7 GHZ P4 in.

So I take it home, angry and saving my money. Then bam, my monitor stops accepting input from the PC. About 20000 reboots later, it comes back on after fixing some minor issues. Then, my computer stops, restarts, stops, restarts, repeat.

I take it back. They claim it's because of FING TRACKING COOKIES slowing down my computer. They clean the HD.

I take it home. Still doesn't work.

I take it back. They put in a used motherboard that accepts the 2.8 GHZ chip in there and replace one of my outdated RAM chips.

Take it home, abd they've formatted my hard drive. All right, that's not so bad, I have an external one with all my important stuff on it. I play with the settings for a while and blam, no sound. Hmm? No sound? Seventeen driver updates later, still no sound.

They replace the motherboard and put in a new one (ASRock). 478 Pin bu 800 FSB now. Put the ram in and the old processor in, and they test it, and it works. I get it home and do some work on it.

Plug in the Windows disc to install the Advanced Power management function...

Reading boot device, booting from disc. Nothing.

I play some Halo Custom Edition from my external harddrive after reinstalling.

I turn it off (hard... cuz I don't have APM!)

I turn it on, only 15 minutes ago. The power cords gone finicky. It turns on, I go and turn on the internet.

INSERT PROPER BOOT DEVICE. Ok, Windows XP.
INSTALLING WINDOWS XP. Ok.... this is supposed to happen.
WHERE DO YOU WANT TO INSTALL WINDOWS XP: EXTERNAL HARDDRIVE G?
Uh, no, not really. Where's my C drive?... C Drive?

WTF!?

So, my C-Drive doesn't work.

Argh. It has to go in again today, when I'm planning to go out on the town. (B-Day yesterday)

congratualtions. and dont worry i am facing a similar problem. i have to upgrade my comp ram with a new ram module and the one i got isnt booting up with xp so i took it back, got it replaced. but now there is a memory mismatch and the second module wotn work with my old ram module. now i have to go back on monday and get a ram module that works with my current setup.

Comps when they work they are great but when they break down you feel like killing the guy who invented it.

Oddly enough I unplugged the computer and brought it upstairs, and then it worked again.

I feel really idiotic now. (Less of Rawr!! and more of WTF?)

Thanks for the sympathy guys!

I have reformatted my old 20 GB hard drive more than dozen times over a period of 3 years.

Prophet of the Pimps's Photo Prophet of the Pimps 09 May 2006

bah. re format my stuff every few months. on my older system it was a format every 2 months.

Foxhound's Photo Foxhound 10 May 2006

I reformat occasionally. its not too bad.

It's pretty bad when you have 38 Gigs of stuff on your drive. Especially when some things in the drive can't be found on the Web anymore.

Burn it all to DVD, the holy solution :read:

I've just gone through a reformat (2-3 weeks ago), and since then my graphics card has died :(

So now I'm stuck with my crappy old Radeon 9250 instead of 9800Pro. Luckily my exams are over in less than a month and I'll probably be getting an X800GTO and new monitor. Woo hoo

Want to save for a X1800 instead?
Quote

Deathstrike's Photo Deathstrike 11 May 2006

I believe there are no X1800's available for AGP slot... but I might consider an X1900, and just stick with the monitor I have now.

Waris's Photo Waris 11 May 2006

Oh, I thought you have migrated to PCI-E already, since you're planning to own a X800.

Or the X800GTO is an AGP variant of the X800?
Quote

Deathstrike's Photo Deathstrike 11 May 2006

The X800 has two types that are also available for AGP, X800GTO and X800Pro. At least, that's what they have at the place where I'm buying most of my PC stuff.

Scrap ATi. Use NVidia. And buy a PCI-E...
Quote

Deathstrike's Photo Deathstrike 11 May 2006

No way, I'm an ATI fanboy and I'll always stay there. The two Nvidia cards I've had only caused me trouble, Geforce 4 MX 440 taking the crown. Nvidia should be sued for even creating that card.

And ofcourse I'll just buy a new motherboard and processor just so I can get PCI-E. It's not like they cost significantly much :read:

While we're at it, go get yourself a Mac :read:

And DS, you might wanna grab a CrossFire-enabled board

Alright, I think I'm going to buy this...

€ 89,- Asus A8N-E Motherboard
€ 309,- AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 3800+
€ 499,- Sapphire RX1900XT ViVo
€ 109,- Western Digital Caviar 300 GB harddisk
€ 319,- Belinea 101927 19" Monitor

Total € 1325,-

Good choices?

Now, start bringing in those donations! :read:

Not bad at all :read:

What's your current memory module?
Quote

Deathstrike's Photo Deathstrike 11 May 2006

Two sticks, both PC3200, one 512MB and one 1GB.
Quote

Waris's Photo Waris 11 May 2006

Oh, OK then.

Well with Athlon 64 you can max out your memory as much as your gold reserve allows :read:
Quote

Deathstrike's Photo Deathstrike 11 May 2006

Well ATM my gold reserve is a bit low :read:

If I play this smart I think I can get about half of this from "parental donations"... leaving the other half. I have about €200 in savings.

I could sell my old motherboard and processor for about €150 probably, and I think I have some more valuables ready for sale...

That, or I could rob a bank.
Quote

Waris's Photo Waris 11 May 2006

Yeah, you may work at the bank, hence the 'bank job' :read:
