I've seen some performers with similar music coils at the introduction days of my university. Its quite a cool sight but the lightning never gets so intense as in the movie excerpt from AJ 
They played like 45 minutes on those things and truthfully at such a time their monotone starts to bore you

Yeah, that was just for a bit of fun. I'd bet everything I owned that the bit in the vid I posted was utterly SFX, but was a pretty fun bit of film anyways
