There's a big difference between the two in British English and American English, so what does it mean to you?

<locky>

:/

(Seriously, was there any point to this at all? Even the Boobie threads have pictures of Boobie birds....)

EDIT: Reopened after a little natter with AllStarZ, added a bit of filler so we know what we're on about 8|

Two nations separated by a common language. Essentially that's what it means to me. Though we might speak "English", there are terms and phrases that an American won't understand coming from a British mouth, and the same is true vice versa.

But still, if you want an linguistic adventure, go drinking with a Scotsman. :/

Since I use a hybrid of American and British English I instantly understood what the original thread title meant :/

To be fair, I know both dialects pretty well, but I must say, original thoughts did turn to fluids. We're British, we have dirty minds, get over it :/

Robin Williams is a king 8D

And tbh, meh to the language issue, but I tend to use American spelling.

The bauld pit cur fell in a furr and Clavers got a crankie, or I had fed an Athol gled on the braes o' Killcrankie 8D . Ten points for who knows what that means :/ .

Proper Scottish is even worse than Irish 8D .

American is easily the easiest on the ear of any English dialect. In the UK, the more northernly you get, the harder it is to understand (though Cockneys are all but completely unintelligible if they use rhyming slang which is a weird excuse to not speak English in the first place 8D ) .

I find it a lot easier to understand Cockney and some of the Scottish accents over some of what comes from the Subcontinent.

Once you get over the rather superfluous R, American is quite easy. Cockney is somewhat difficult to understand if you're not acquainted with it, I'd say, because they omit half or more of the consonants in every word 8D .

I said the Subcontinent, not America. A thick Indian or Sri Lankan accent is a lot harder to get through than Cockney, especially since we use a bit of Rhyming Slang in Australia as well.

Hmmmm. People from India and Sri Lanka aren't necessarily native English speakers though. Half the time it's the grammatical incongruity that makes them hard to understand rather than anything else: "What you are saying?" - "Please be paying attention" - "you are having bad eyesight" etc. My Pakistani supervisor is a great source for stuff like this :/ .

I understand the Missouri accent better than the Scottish or Irish :/
And I also understand most American accents than British ones in general, but that's mainly cause I watch a lot of American movies and series, and almost nothing British 8D
