Colour is certainly makes its own impact, that's for sure. However, I fear that because a lot of us are so used to viewing pictures from WWII in black and white, to see them in colour almost makes them look a tad fake. Of course, I'm not saying these photos are, but, one can't deny that thought being in the back of one's mind.

What you are looking at is horrible lighting and terrible poses.

The soviet images are also pretty much only propaganda, but I do love the images of the Katyusha and the KV-2

The Atlantic are doing a photo series on WW2 for 20 weeks (45 photos per week) - these colour photos are merely a few of this week's offering. See here for the other sets. Not all of them are in colour, mind you.
Regarding the fakeness, it explains on the site that a lot of these photos were posed for propaganda purposes. The captions they were posted with are the original captions from 1942 that the photos were published with.
