I came across an age old discussion on Deezire forums and there was mention of a w3d model tag in the code that would allow the use of a w3d model instead of a picture as the unit cameo.
Anyone here familiar with this or tried this before?

What about other alternatives such as bink videos or such?

AFAIK using 3d model, video, or animated picture as cameo is really impossible. W3D as cameo probably was a scrapped feature. if it were implemented it will looks like in Warcraft III. :P

however several things have proven possible:

1. playing ingame movie on radar using skirmish scripts.
DeeZire done this for the radar on/off effect in his ProGen mod. when the radar goes on/off some noises appears, making it ala TS/RA2 radar.

2. "animated" commandbar background using the WND editing.
as seen in Fincer's Situation Zero mod.
rather than the background animated it's the picture position that were animated. like how you see the promotion arrow when "you have been promoted".

3. making a 3d model viewed always parallel to the camera.
just tick the camparallel thing on w3d settings on the intended mesh(es) before exporting the model. :P
see CWC infantry unit symbols that hovering on their heads.
