Unreal Tournament, Age of Empires II, Quake 3, Counter Strike, System Shock 2, Simcity 3000, Tiberian Sun, GTA2, Rollercoaster Tycoon, Worms Armageddon, Planescape Torment...
Pretty much the finest video game year of my childhood, I think. Plenty of innovative and very good new releases, along with some of the greatest sequels to ever grace the gaming plane.

2002: Timesplitters 2, GTA Vice City, TES: Morrowind, Kingdom Hearts, Splinter Cell, Hitman 2, Red Faction 2, Ratchet & Clank, Warcraft III, 007: Nightfire, MGS: 2, Battlefield: 1942, Age of Mythology, Metroid Prime, Medieval: Total War, Neverwinter Nights, Super Smash Bros. Melee and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3.
I know it's a bit of a console list, but it's shows that some good games were made after the 90s
Also you can add Resident Evil to the 1996 list.

That's another way to think of positive game development, I guess .

Like 1998 had these games: Starcraft, Fallout 2, Baldur's Gate, Half-Life, Thief, Banjo Kazooie, Ocarina of Time, Metal Gear Solid, Rainbow 6, Resident Evil 2.
Yet since I haven't owned a console and got my own PC quite late (early 2000s), then I can relate for more modern year releases.
And so the year for me would be 2007: Mass Effect, Halo 3, COD 4, the Orange Box, Crysis, World in Conflict, C&C3, CoH:Opposing Fronts, Supreme Commander, Kane & Lynch: Dead Men, Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl, Medal of Honor: Airborne, Shivering Isles, Guitar Hero II and III, Burning Crusade, Resident Evil 4, Bioshock, Assassin's Creed, Unreal Tournament 3, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Rock Band, Super Mario Galaxy, and Tomb Raider Anniversary.
Sure I haven't played these console games in the list yet I have heard so much good about them.

If you didn't play Resident Evil 4, you never played a proper video game at all! Quick get HD version on Steam now!
