Why websites have Guest Books?

I had always wondered to myself, why do websites have Guest Books? They serve no purpose aside from letting people comment on your site. Which they can do on most sites in the Comments section of Update Posts.

However, lately I've discovered the true reason as to why! It's simply entertainment for the Web Master!
