Have just come back from the Olympic Park. Fantastic job they've done with it. Really, really amazed at how well the whole thing has turned out. Honestly didn't think that we'd pull it off like that. Plus, Opening Ceremony was pretty damn kewl as well!

It's kind of weird that Oz' Olympic debut was in 1896 though, as Australia didn't really exist back then :P

Not as an independent country, no, but all of the colonies were self-governing and were sufficiently independent from the UK.

The sole competitor was born in the UK, but spent most of his life in Australia (and also won 2 gold).

Depends who you ask, but unfortunately I highly doubt the Aborigines would have been able to make Australia the second most developed country in the world.

In comparison to the native populations of other areas, particularly in other parts of Asia and the Americas, the Aboriginal population wasn't that developed, primarily due to the geography which really only suited hunter-gatherer cultures and a near-complete lack of contact with other cultures. The indigenous population was splintered into hundreds of different nomadic tribes with no clear leader or organised structure.

If you believe that's heaven, by all means, believe it. While the British, and by extension, early Australian governments didn't have the absolute nicest policies, I don't think you can argue with the fact that the negatives are outweighed heavily by the positives of European settlement.
