I earn enough to keep my subscription in under an hour of work.

There is really no reason to pirate it if you earn money from it. When I did a brief stint at a B2B software company you really do end up appreciating expensive software a lot more (except Enterprise, fuck Enterprise)

£40/month? Fuck that. Sure I will have access to all of CS6, but I only really need Fireworks and Photoshop. Within 7 months I could have just bought fireworks (and I already own Photoshop :read:), and I would get to actually keep it, rather than having to keep paying.
I pay $30AU a month (<£20). If you have a previously registered Adobe product you get it 50% off, or at least I did.

The reason to subscribe is because all updates are included, along with Typekit (which a subscription to is alone more than I pay for Creative Cloud). It ends up being a whole lot cheaper in the long run because you don't have to pay an extra $300 a year in order to stay up to date.

You may only 'need' Fireworks and Photoshop, but having access to the other programs doesn't hurt.

Also, I'm not sure how it works for you but I can claim it against my tax as a business expense (that's if you even get taxes in Guernsey D8).

I've never (legally) owned an adobe product, so I wouldn't get that discount and presumably that would be a limited off anyway, you would only get that discount for x months, right?

Sure, it would be nice to have access to all the other programs in CS and Typekit would be pretty awesome too (although there are numerous free sources of fonts...), but for the amount I would use them, I can't really count that as going towards the monthly subscription.

I wouldn't know how the tax thing works over here, but I've certainly never heard of something like that over here, and since I would primarily be using the software for personal/non-profit things, I don't see how I could claim it was for business.

My main gripe, and this not limited to this, but applies to all subscription services, is that you don't actually own the thing you are paying for. If, for whatever reason, I was unable to pay my subscription I would be fucked.

EDIT: I think I'm gonna have to sleep on it. But it is starting to seem tempting... but it's still a fair amount of money in the long run. D:

I think it was for the first 12 months (I'm about 6 months in now), which is around a $600 saving.

Considering the Adobe product I have registered was a student version which cost me $300, I definitely saved money 'buying' an Adobe product. Honesty is rewarded, thankfully.

I agree, but besides for a very small amount of limited cases the fonts on Typekit are a hell of a lot better than anything on Google Webfonts. It's worth paying for the hinting alone. Consider that a lot of the typefaces you get on a Typekit subscription (you get the full library with Creative Cloud) cost more than Adobe software actually costs, you do by some metrics get far more than your money's worth.

So you don't have tax deductions over there? Wiz will probably know far more about this than me.

I understand, and in general I will agree with you on this, but you can argue that software (non-games) isn't really a tangible product in many ways, particularly software that you do work with like the Adobe suite.

It is more like a service, like a phone line (or web hosting). It is something you use regularly enough that subscriptions make sense for it.

Well unfortunately I had never been in a position to buy PS before...

Yeah... but I'm not a designer. Pretty fonts really don't interest me much.

I see where you're coming from, but the point is I can buy and keep a version of software. Yes, I may have to pay for upgrades to the latest version, but I could easily live with the current version of software (As long as I don't try the newer versions - Ignorance is bliss 8|)

But as I said, I am coming 'round the idea.

We don't have them in the way that Australia and/or America do. Unless Bob works for his current firm as consultant or freelancer, i.e., self employed and VAT registered, then he will be taxed under the PAYE system and everything is deducted at source. That means no self assessment and nothing to claim back. Best you would get is the VAT back anyway (which is quite a lot these days).

Their population indeed does grow larger, however if they do not invade some more land soon ( preferably Australia ) hard days awaiting them...

The £40 is already excluding VAT. :/
