Yes, we had a cheese and wine evening yesterday. Brit style of course, of most people were smashed before a normal party would even begin. This style of drinking is very efficient btw, because it allows you to still go to bed not THAT late and therefore still be at work the day after

Blame our previous archaic licensing laws. The only reason we Brits have reputation for getting hammered before anything begins is our instinct that the pubs will shut before we're drunk so we cram it in early doors! Personally that style has never worked for me.
We predrink here too, even though most pubs are open until 0400/0500, because alcohol.
