I am pretty sure he realized how powerful USofA military was after he became the president and said: "Holy shit! Look at all that firepower, it is more than rest of the world combined! Why are we not stomping them yet!? You are all pussies! Let me show you how it is done!" or something like that But pretty sure he used the word "pussy" while talking to commanders.

Also, war is good for America. It's like a seed that blossoms in fire.

Also it might be that China luring America into a trap. I doubt North Korea would be able to talk shit like that on its own. They very well know they can't do shit to America with those nukes. Nukes will be shot down before they reach anywhere, not even China can mount such an attack. Best North Korea can do is to nuke South Korea, Japan and wipe out some islands in the Pacific with American bases on them. Doing that will be suicide for North Korea but will greatly benefit China.
Who cares about what happens to North Korean people in the process anyways? Certainly their leaders don't care, i don't see why China should give a single fuck about North Korea except for using them.

I think as much as Trump is crazy, this is just a show of power. He knows that entering a losing (or devastating war) will brand him as a bad president. Politicians struggle to spin death.

Turkey tried to do the same by entering into Syria. Neither Russia nor US allowed Turkey to go further than their current position by reinforcing the borders of the currently "liberated" areas and safeguarding those points with their troops. I can already say Turkey's next move, i don't have to be a military commander to guess that. They will enter to Syria or even possibly Iraq from another front (after the referendum) to test the reactions of US and Russia.
Point is, as i said, they know each other's power and capabilities. What they don't know is how "crazy" they can get and what they are willing to risk, or if they are willing to risk anything at all.
