Plexiglass has an EXTREMELY complicated manufacturing tree, actually. Crude oil is distilled, and the naphtha fraction is first hydrotreated, then separated into a high- and a low-boiling fraction. The low-boiling one is sent to a reformer for aromatisation, out of which they distill BTEX. B fractions are alkylated with propylene over a zeolite, then autoxidised in air, and hydrolysed with sulfuric acid into phenol and acetone, the latter of which is reacted with hydrogen cyanide, reacted with sulfuric acid again to sulfatise, methanolised to form the monomer, and polymerised, generally with cumene hydroperoxide (formed in one of the previous steps).

Industrial chemistry is actually realy interesting. My friend, who works at Shell, and I, who's worked at DSM, a plastics company, are piecing together the main processes of the petrochemical industry. There's an incredible efficiency behind everything.

Well unless crude oil is split into 7 or so different products and it takes 4-8 different steps before you produce petrol, it's not close enough to the real deal .
