Yes, it was very shocking. He's a high-profile journalist who's done amazing work at solving crime. Lately, organised crime.

The syndicate that hit him was the Moroccan mafia. Peter is helping the police with solving the case, and is helping with the crown witness in the court case against them.

Oh, of course they can track them down. They know exactly who they are. But obtaining evidence (especially legally) is another matter. Peter R. de Vries is an exceptional envestigative journalist who doesn't always have to follow the same rules as the police. He's worked on tons of high-profile cases, he's really good - and mercilessly tenacious, which is something the police very much are not. He's tracked some cases for years until the people involved were brought to justice.

However, for the mafia to hit a journalist, especially such a well-known one, is a pretty big step. That's on par with hitting politicians in terms of seriousness. They wouldn't risk adding this much notiriety to their case if they weren't pretty desperate.

The Moroccan mafia is a somewhat recent thing in the Netherlands, but it's pretty serious. Really hope there's a breakthrough in the case and they bust the whole thing wide open.
