While nuclear war will be absolutely horrible and death count will be unlike anything in history, it still won't be world ending as people think it would be. People assume both NATO and Russia will successfully use ALL of their nukes at once.

A chunk of them will be intercepted. First strike will be on nuclear missile silo sites. Both sides will lose their silos at around same time. Remanining nukes will be on submarines and other mobile platforms, and there are not hundreds of those platforms. Some of them will also be destroyed.

Second strike will be on very important military targets, such as large bases. Possibly will happen at around same time as first strike if the launchers available and ready (possibly smaller nukes will be used, no need to use city destroyers for every target)

In worst case scenario, possibly all the major cities of NATO countries, Russia and China will be gone. Not every single city in the world will be targeted and destroyed by nukes, not possible anyway.

I have seen some studies about how many needed to cause a full on nuclear winter. Around a hundred city will cause it (All the fires breaking out at the same time in a massive area and possibly spread further)

World survived massive volcanic eruptions, will survive this one too.

Who cares? Nuclear war doesn't benefit anyone. If it happens, we're fucked. There is nothing we can do to stop it. It's pointless to speculate the possibilities, so we might as well assume it won't happen.
