"Boy Severs Arms After Playing Video Game" read the headline of a story that ran on CNN's iReport site earlier this morning. It's the stuff of nightmares for video game advocates, another chance for those who demonize games' effects on human behavior to crucify the medium.
But, here's the problem with unscreened crowd-sourced news, which is what iReport is: sometimes, you wind up with complete and utter nonsense.
The piece, which appears to be a cut-and-paste job from newssite The Global Daily, purports that 16 year-old Ryan Dunham had a friend try to hack his arms off after playing to Katawa Shoujo, a dating sim where the female characters suffer fro various disabilities like missing limbs. Here's a piece of the report:
Quote
The game's real and Kotaku's reported on it several times.
This report, though, appears to be fake. Navigating over to the Global Daily brings readers to SkipHopz, a click-bait site filled with other spurious headlines where Seinfeld star Jason Alexander is supposedly dead, former teen pop star Zac Hanson supposedly purchased a swimming pool full of cocaine and reality show curiosity Tila Tequila was supposedly strangled by komodo dragons. In other gaming news, they've written that Valve's Gabe Newell was dead last December. Right.
As of this writing, the iReport's been pulled from CNN. Based on the sourcing, it looks like the bogus sensalization should never have run in the first place.

Residents of a small Polish town were shocked after blood began bubbling up from storm water drains and streaming down the street.
The blood formed a river of sticky red along the road in Koscierzyna and pooled into large bloody puddles, prompting locals to call emergency services on Monday, the Telegraph reports.
Video shot by a local resident shows the blood streaming out from under a manhole cover on a bitumen road.
An investigation found the blood came from a meat processing plant and a blocked drain caused it to pour out into the street.
Regional police spokesman Janusz Matrejek said authorities were now investigating to find out who was responsible for the mess.
Residents have questioned how the blood left the meat processing plant without being treated.
"There were two schools on the street where a large amount of blood was flowing, the blood was also heading towards a local market. When you consider public health this situation is appalling," one resident wrote on a news website.
A spokesman for the municipal authorities said the blood had since been cleaned up

In an article published in the journal Nature, Tasmanian scientist David Bowman suggests using the enormous mammals to help control the African pest gamba grass.
It's a far-fetched idea, but what would it look like if these foreign beasts roamed the outback? Show us your Photoshop skills by sending images to news.feedback

ISLANDERS are being warned to lock up their property after Guernsey became a prime target for scrap thieves last year.
Judge Philip Robey confirmed there had been 21 complaints in 2011 when jailing 22-year-old UK scrap metal dealer William Collins for two months.
Collins had stolen a pick-up truck, broken it up and tried to ship parts from it to England.
Collins, of 119, New Road, Netley Abbey, Southampton, admitted the offence when he appeared in the Magistrate’s Court.

Dean Dinnen, 24, was sentenced to three years jail last week after he pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm, affray using threatening behaviour, and criminal damage in Hull Crown Court last week, the Daily Mail reports.
Security video shows Dinnen running into The Endyke pub in Hull, northeastern England, and waving the chainsaw in patrons faces last August.
The court heard Dinnen was drunk and on drugs and had come to seek revenge on a man who had thrown him out for lighting a cigarette about 50 minutes earlier.
But bar patrons fought back — arming themselves with pool cues, kegs and bar stools, and hurling them at Dinnen.
Amazingly, Dinnen only injured one person in the chaos, slashing the arm of 32-year-old Adrian Pryor who suffered severed tendons and needed 21 stitches.
Witness Kevin Fletcher told the court he thought he would die when he fell over while trying to flee.
"I ran. I did not look back. I could hear the chainsaw screaming behind me and I got the feeling he was right behind me," he said.
The video shows Dinnen leaving the bar and getting overpowered by patrons before police arrived and he was arrested.
The court heard the man Dinnen had been looking for had actually left the pub before he returned.[/qoute]

The guy with what looks like a metal barrel/keg takes him on before the majority of the other people come out side. The guy gets hit about 3 times before he gets well and truely mobbed. How he didnt get very badly hurt from being hit with that many large objects is a mystery.

The 45-year-old from southern Sweden was found Friday, emaciated and too weak to utter more than a few words.
He was found not far from the city of Umea in the north of Sweden by snowmobilers who thought they had come across a car wreck until they dug their way to a window and saw movement inside.
The man, who was laying in the back seat in a sleeping bag, said he had been in the car since December 19.
"Just incredible that he's alive considering that he had no food, but also since it's been really cold for some time after Christmas," a rescue team member told regional daily Vasterbottens-Kuriren, which broke the news.
Ebbe Nyberg, duty officer at the Umea police, said police saw no reason to doubt that the man had been stuck in the car for a very long time.
"We would not make something like this up. The rescue services were on site too and saw the same as us," he told Vasterbottens-Kuriren.
Umea University Hospital, where the man is recovering after being rescued by police and a rescue team, said in a statement he was doing well considering the circumstances.
Doctors at the hospital said humans would normally be able to survive for about four weeks without food. Besides eating snow, the man probably survived by going into a dormant-like state, physician Stefan Branth told Vasterbottens-Kuriren.
"A bit like a bear that hibernates. Humans can do that," he said. "He probably had a body temperature of around 31 degrees (Celsius) which the body adjusted to. Due to the low temperature, not much energy was used up."
Why the man ended up under the snow in the forest remains unknown, police said.

Police said Barnes took photos of the burning 35m tree, a national landmark commonly known as "The Senator", but did not call firefighters when she set the tree alight about 5.30am on January 16.
"I can't believe I burned down a tree older than Jesus," she allegedly told friends later.
Seminole County Sheriff's officers allegedly found methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia at Barnes' home, and confiscated her mobile phone and laptop.
The giant tree burned to the ground despite firefighters' efforts to save it.
Barnes describes herself as a model and included several modelling shots on her Facebook page.
Since her arrest a series of her posing nude have been published online by a Florida radio station's website.
Barnes is now out on bail.
