A 62-year-old man in Melvindale, Mich., died on Memorial Day after a fight with his 42-year-old daughter over food, according to local media reports.
When police arrived at the home, the found the man alive, but he was later pronounced dead at a hospital in Dearborn, The Detroit News reported.

Police believe the man was attacked after an argument with his daughter over some dinner rolls. The man had been stabbed, according to WDIV-TV, which has a video report from the scene. A gun was also involved in the argument, police said.

Police found the daughter hiding in woods behind the home. She was arrested and is considered a suspect, police said.
Some neighbors told WDIV that they had seen the daughter behaving erratically in the past, though they hadn't noticed any prior conflicts between her and her father.

...

Now why would you take someones life over a dinner roll?

Weird and wonderful is the only way to describe many of the stories which come out of New Zealand this past week.

By now most people have heard about the service station owners from the North Island city of Rotorua, who skipped town after Westpac accidentally put $10 million in their bank account.

They are still hiding out somewhere in Asia.

But New Zealand police managed to catch up with Billy the Hunted One.

South Island man William Stewart had been playing a cat and mouse game with police for 100 days and became a bit famous in the process.

Despite a string of violence and drug convictions, Billy the Hunted One - as he likes to be known - was being written up as a "national hero" in some newspapers.

When he was being chased by police, he would bamboozle them by pulling off the road and turning off his headlights.

He also gave hitch-hikers rides in his stolen vehicles and scratched thank-you notes into kitchen tables with a knife when he stole food from farmhouses.

One female journalist appeared to have developed a slight crush on the long-haired fugitive.

In her stories she likened him to a "dishevelled version of American crooner Michael Bolton".

But Billy was bad - his luck ran out when he tried to steal a farmer's quad bike in the middle of the night.

Free goat, anyone?

As the week wore on, the stories got even stranger.

A motor vehicle company in New Zealand announced it was giving away a free goat with every ute sold.

Its public relations man was quoted in the papers as saying, with sheep numbers in decline in New Zealand, it was time to "float the goat".

He talked up their weed-eating abilities and also guaranteed there was zero risk of getting goat flu.

Then, police revealed thieves had broken into a wine shop just down the road from the ABC's office in central Auckland.

Local robberies do not usually raise an eyebrow, but this was no ordinary break-and-enter.

The bandits stole alcohol worth $250,000.

They pinched rare pinot noir, very costly cognac and a bottle of Dom Perignon, which was plated in gold and worth $14,000.

Police believe it was a robbery to order and the bottles have probably already hit the black market.

On the subject of beverages, a New Zealand woman came forward with her story of how she lost 45 kilograms in eight months.

She revealed she had done it by drinking nothing but the energy drink Red Bull.

Brooke Robertson says she downed about 10 cans a day. If she was desperate for some solids she scoffed a handful of cereal.

She hid her addiction from her family until she had a minor heart attack. She now suffers from anxiety and has a permanent heart murmur.

Mo. family Christmas photo turns up in Czech ad

Quote

ST. LOUIS – It's an international mystery: How did a Missouri family's Christmas card photo end up in the Czech Republic, splashed across a huge storefront advertisement? Danielle Smith said Wednesday that the photo taken of her family last year got sent to family and friends, and was posted on her blog and a few social networking sites. The photo showed her and her husband Jeff holding their two young children.

About 10 days ago, one of Smith's college friends was driving through Prague when he spotted their huge smiling faces in the window of a store specializing in Europeann food. He snapped a few pictures and sent them to a flabbergasted Smith.

"It's a life-size picture in a grocery store window in Prague — my Christmas card photo!" said Smith, 36, who lives in the St. Louis suburb of O'Fallon.

Mario Bertuccio, who owns the Grazie store in Prague, said the photo was from the Internet. Details were sparse, but he said he thought it was computer-generated. When told it was a real photo — of a real family — he said he started taking steps to remove it.

"We'll be happy to write an e-mail with our apology," said Bertuccio, who said he would send the Smiths a bottle of good wine if they lived in his eastern European country.

The Smiths and photographer Gina Kelly hadn't authorized anyone to use the pictures. Kelly said she has asked a professional photographers' organization to help figure out how her image wound up in Prague.

Smith has gotten 180,000 hits to her Web site since she recently posted the story about the well-traveled snapshot. She said the photo wasn't used in an unseemly manner, it was just used to tell potential shoppers about the store's delivery service.

Smith said next time she posts a photo on the Internet, she's going to lower the resolution or add an electronic watermark to make it hard to reproduce.

"This story doesn't frighten me, but the potential frightens me," Smith said.

This 14-year-old boy is Gerrit Blank, and he is probably smiling because he survived a 30,000 mph meteorite hit. His tale—confirmed by scientists at Germany's Walter Hohmann Observatory—seems like the genesis of a superhero:

Quote

At first I just saw a large ball of light, and then I suddenly felt a pain in my hand. Then a split second after that there was an enormous bang like a crash of thunder. The noise that came after the flash of light was so loud that my ears were ringing for hours afterwards. When it hit me it knocked me flying and then was still going fast enough to bury itself into the road.

That could have been written by Stan Lee himself, but it is what really happened. According to scientists, the highly magnetic rock—the size of a pea—came from outer space. It was probably a lot bigger when it entered the atmosphere, but this was the bit that survived the burning process. It hit him on his hand, leaving a 3-inch scar. If the hot meteorite had hit him on his head or torso, he would be dead now.

Only one other human has survived a meteor strike—a one in a million chance.

An Air India passenger jet heading to Frankfurt has been forced to return to Mumbai after a bag of curry powder set off smoke and fire alarms.

Pilots on the Boeing 747-400 plane activated fire extinguishers after receiving a cockpit warning about a fire in the cargo hold, the Mumbai Mirror newspaper said.

But on the plane's return to India's financial and entertainment capital, engineers said the alert had been triggered by the escape of particles from a bag containing two to three kilograms of curry powder.

The bag, belonging to a passenger from the western Indian state of Gujarat, was removed before the plane took off again after a 12-hour delay.

"On taking off for the second time, the pilot apologised for the delay and announced that a bag containing curry powder had caused the problem," Air India spokesman Jitendra Bhargava said.

Mangoes and meat products that generate heat have been suspected of causing similar incidents on Air India flights in the past, the newspaper said.

A New York man has been arrested for impersonating his dead mother in order to claim $115,000 (£70,500) in social security benefits and rent subsidies.

Thomas Prusik-Parkin, 49, is accused by prosecutors of regularly dressing up in a wig, dress and make-up in order to fool the authorities.

The alleged scam has been going on ever since Mr Prusik-Parkin's mother, Irene Prusik, died in 2003 at the age of 73.

He faces charges of theft, forgery and conspiracy.

"I held my mother when she was dying and breathed in her last breath, so I am my mother," Mr Prusik-Parkin said when he was arrested, according to police.

False information

Using a walking stick, heavy make-up and fake ID, and accompanied by a man posing as Mrs Prusik's nephew, Mr Prusik-Parkin would, according to prosecutors, collect benefit cheques, visit banks and even appear in court.

When Mrs Prusik died, Mr Prusik-Parkin is accused of giving her funeral director a false social security number and date of birth so that her death would not show up in government records.

He is then alleged to have started claiming $700 a month in social security benefits in her name on top of his own disability benefits.

Mr Prusik-Parkin has also been accused of filing for bankruptcy in his mother's name, and then collecting $39,000 in rent subsidies from the city government.

Another man, Mhilton Rimolo, 47, is accused of pretending to be Mrs Prusik's nephew, and was accompanying Mr Prusik-Parkin on 29 April when - posing as Mrs Prusik - he renewed a driving licence in her name.

Brooklyn police are reported to have been alerted to the alleged scam by a tip-off.
