He also gave hitch-hikers rides in his stolen vehicles and scratched thank-you notes into kitchen tables with a knife when he stole food from farmhouses.

One female journalist appeared to have developed a slight crush on the long-haired fugitive.

In her stories she likened him to a "dishevelled version of American crooner Michael Bolton".

But Billy was bad - his luck ran out when he tried to steal a farmer's quad bike in the middle of the night.

Free goat, anyone?

As the week wore on, the stories got even stranger.

A motor vehicle company in New Zealand announced it was giving away a free goat with every ute sold.

Its public relations man was quoted in the papers as saying, with sheep numbers in decline in New Zealand, it was time to "float the goat".

He talked up their weed-eating abilities and also guaranteed there was zero risk of getting goat flu.

Then, police revealed thieves had broken into a wine shop just down the road from the ABC's office in central Auckland.

Local robberies do not usually raise an eyebrow, but this was no ordinary break-and-enter.

The bandits stole alcohol worth $250,000.

They pinched rare pinot noir, very costly cognac and a bottle of Dom Perignon, which was plated in gold and worth $14,000.

Police believe it was a robbery to order and the bottles have probably already hit the black market.

On the subject of beverages, a New Zealand woman came forward with her story of how she lost 45 kilograms in eight months.

She revealed she had done it by drinking nothing but the energy drink Red Bull.

Brooke Robertson says she downed about 10 cans a day. If she was desperate for some solids she scoffed a handful of cereal.

She hid her addiction from her family until she had a minor heart attack. She now suffers from anxiety and has a permanent heart murmur.

Danielle Smith said Wednesday that the photo taken of her family last year got sent to family and friends, and was posted on her blog and a few social networking sites. About 10 days ago, one of Smith's college friends was driving through Prague when he spotted their huge smiling faces in the window of a store specializing in Europeann food. He snapped a few pictures and sent them to a flabbergasted Smith.

"It's a life-size picture in a grocery store window in Prague — my Christmas card photo!" said Smith, 36, who lives in the St. Louis suburb of O'Fallon.

Mario Bertuccio, who owns the Grazie store in Prague, said the photo was from the Internet. Details were sparse, but he said he thought it was computer-generated. When told it was a real photo — of a real family — he said he started taking steps to remove it.

"We'll be happy to write an e-mail with our apology," said Bertuccio, who said he would send the Smiths a bottle of good wine if they lived in his eastern European country.

The Smiths and photographer Gina Kelly hadn't authorized anyone to use the pictures. Kelly said she has asked a professional photographers' organization to help figure out how her image wound up in Prague.

Smith has gotten 180,000 hits to her Web site since she recently posted the story about the well-traveled snapshot. She said the photo wasn't used in an unseemly manner, it was just used to tell potential shoppers about the store's delivery service.

Smith said next time she posts a photo on the Internet, she's going to lower the resolution or add an electronic watermark to make it hard to reproduce.

"This story doesn't frighten me, but the potential frightens me," Smith said.

A New York man has been arrested for impersonating his dead mother in order to claim $115,000 (£70,500) in social security benefits and rent subsidies.

Thomas Prusik-Parkin, 49, is accused by prosecutors of regularly dressing up in a wig, dress and make-up in order to fool the authorities.

The alleged scam has been going on ever since Mr Prusik-Parkin's mother, Irene Prusik, died in 2003 at the age of 73.

He faces charges of theft, forgery and conspiracy.

"I held my mother when she was dying and breathed in her last breath, so I am my mother," Mr Prusik-Parkin said when he was arrested, according to police.

False information

Using a walking stick, heavy make-up and fake ID, and accompanied by a man posing as Mrs Prusik's nephew, Mr Prusik-Parkin would, according to prosecutors, collect benefit cheques, visit banks and even appear in court.

When Mrs Prusik died, Mr Prusik-Parkin is accused of giving her funeral director a false social security number and date of birth so that her death would not show up in government records.

He is then alleged to have started claiming $700 a month in social security benefits in her name on top of his own disability benefits.

Mr Prusik-Parkin has also been accused of filing for bankruptcy in his mother's name, and then collecting $39,000 in rent subsidies from the city government.

Another man, Mhilton Rimolo, 47, is accused of pretending to be Mrs Prusik's nephew, and was accompanying Mr Prusik-Parkin on 29 April when - posing as Mrs Prusik - he renewed a driving licence in her name.

Brooklyn police are reported to have been alerted to the alleged scam by a tip-off.
