Although more often then not we use 'prison' over everything else, but when jail is used, the official way to spell it is gaol.

Yang Youde, 56, has twice repelled government-backed demolition crews by firing the cannon and peppering workers with fireworks.
Mr Yang manufactured his arsenal with used stove pipes and $US300 worth of fireworks, and his cannon can fire projectiles up to 100 metres.
"I'm a law-abiding citizen. I don't believe these fireworks can kill," Mr Yang said in an interview.
"I must protect my rights. I believe the lower-level officials are out to harm the people, but higher-level leaders are enlightened.
"I'm a farmer. My whole life depends on farming. If I surrender, I have nowhere to go."
It is reported workers assaulted Mr Yang after he ran out of fireworks in a confrontation in May.
China has witnessed a surge of violent confrontations triggered by land seizures as officials and businesses seek to cash in on a nationwide property boom by evicting residents and developing their land.
In another case, a 47-year-old woman set herself on fire in November in Sichuan province over the planned demolition of her husband's garment-processing business.
She died 16 days later.

He tried once, he tried again, he tried a third time - but each attempt to break the shop window rebounded on him.
The still unidentified burglar was throwing a rock at a shop in Wellington, New Zealand, which sells skateboards and streetwear.
But the rock just kept bouncing back and knocking him on the head until he, and a watching accomplice, gave up.
Police say they hope the experience has knocked some sense into the burglar.
Detective Sergeant Mark Scott said the two offenders were caught on camera trying to smash a window of Empire Skate, in Herd Street, Chaffers Marina before dawn.
"We can see from the CCTV images, one of the offenders is seen throwing a rock at the window which then comes down and hits him on the head, at which point they flee the scene."
Police are now asking for witnesses to come forward as they continue to try to identify the failed burglars.

Walter had pleaded guilty to two counts of witness tampering. Prosecutors said that in one case he wrote his girlfriend, telling her what to say on the witness stand. They said he also asked a friend to buy scissors and plant them as evidence to lead investigators astray.
Oregon law doesn't specifically deal with stealing or gluing a stranger's hair. So prosecutors charged him with third-degree robbery among other crimes, and later with witness tampering.

In a television appearance on Thursday to extol the virtues of a portable computer his socialist government plans to introduce at public schools, Chavez said youngsters had stopped him in the street to tell him they saw him on television.
"It seems that there are mothers here who, instead of putting their kids to sleep with cartoons, put them to sleep with Chavez," he said.
"The child dozes off and dozes off, and Chavez speaks and speaks and speaks. And the child falls asleep," said the loquacious leader, well known for speeches that can last for hours.
Venezuelan TV stations are interrupted regularly for Chavez's speeches, which can range from global politics to the nationalising of businesses.
Every Sunday he hosts his Hello President program, which starts at 11:00am and often lasts most of the day.
Oh, Chavez.

The dog was renamed 'Lucky' by 57-year-old Agnes Tamas after it survived being swept away from the Hungarian village of Gesztered, Photonews Agencia Noticiosa reports.
Tamas said: "I saw the roofs of the local houses being ripped off one by one, and I ran into my garden to try and get to the cellar.
"I couldn't believe it when the dog house flew up into the air - complete with my dog cowering inside. It was like something out of the Wizard Of Oz."
Kalman Csutor, who called the Red Cross after finding the dog following a local radio appeal, added: "He was pretty shaken.
"I have no idea what happened to the dog house or whether the wind carried him all that way - but when I found him he was 20 miles from home."
That's one lucky dog. =o

Paul Nigel Sneddon, 47, pleaded guilty to careless driving and drunken driving after being nearly three times over the legal alcohol limit, the Dominion Post newspaper reported.
Police found Sneddon, a former baker, trapped in his overturned Ford Laser on June 1, drinking a can of beer after he failed to take a corner properly and crashed through a wooden barrier, flipping his vehicle.
Defence lawyer Peter Young said that when Sneddon found he could not open the doors, "he had nothing else to do at that point, so he had another beer".
When asked by police how much he had consumed, Sneddon replied: "Plenty, I've been drinking for four days straight."
Sneddon, who is estranged from his wife, told the Wellington- based newspaper that he went on a drinking binge after losing his job at a bakery on the same day that he heard his father was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Judge Gregory Ross fined him NZ$1,100 ($890) and disqualified him from driving for 10 months. It was his first offence.

In a scenario that would have Fabio Capello and just about every player at this year's World Cup preferring to tear their hair out with a garden hoe, an Australian man has been and will be living inside a massive version of the hated Adidas Jabulani World Cup ball for the entirety of the tournament. The horror!
Adam Santarossa was selected by Adidas to spend the month-long tournament inside of the gigantic (six meters in diameter) Jabulani watching the matches, tweeting, writing blogs and playing video games. Oh, and he's getting paid a handsome sum to do it. Tough life. The AFP explains:
"Other people have work commitments and family commitments. My only problem is getting my blog done on time," he told AFP. "It's an easy life I'm living. I'm sure people will be quite jealous."
Santarossa has a cleaner, free laundry, a PlayStation 3 and a laptop, and will get 3,000 dollars ($2,600 U.S.) for his trouble, along with the contents of the ball and three bags full of sports gear.
He is allowed to have friends round to the ball, on Melbourne's dockside, for Australia's games and even had a visit from a minor celebrity, singer Dannii Minogue's partner Kris Smith.
So I guess Adam will be living in depression-driven isolation now that Australia has been knocked out of the tournament with 18 days to go. But no matter, he's got clean underwear, a PS3 and a visit from the D-list boyfriend of a C-list celebrity to keep him pushing on!
"I had a bit of trouble at the start -- it's a bit difficult having people peer in through the windows 24/7," he said.
I guess it's not all fun and games when you are a human zoo animal.
"But it's a pretty easy life. I'm going to be seeing if they can extend my lease."
This just goes to show that many World Cup participants' worst hallucinogen-induced nightmare can be your average Australian Joe's fantasy life. Ah, the wonders of the World Cup ...

The tiny town of Otira, in the Southern Alps of New Zealand, is on the market for $NZ1 million ($817,060).
The village's current owners, Bill and Christine Hennah, made the purchase in 1998 after passing through the town and "feeling sorry for it".
They paid $NZ80,000 ($65,290) for the hotel, school, railway station, town hall and 18 houses.
The Kiwi couple, now in their 60s, are asking for $NZ350,000 ($285,520) for the hotel, or $NZ1 million for the whole lot.
Otira has a population of 40 and is in the middle of a national park on the west coast of the South Island.

Airport management said a review of the intruder alarm system had been carried out since the break-in.
The forced entry was reported to the police, but no action was taken against the man.
Airport director Colin Le Ray said any breach of security was worrying.
‘It does concern us,’ he said. ‘It is the first occurrence we have had of a break-in since the terminal was opened and it does concern us that someone has managed to get in. As a result we are reviewing our alarm system and making changes to it.’

The Tour sans Faim (Tower without Hunger), standing 7.82 metres, had to be taken down because it was starting to look more like the leaning Tower of Pisa.
A temperature of more than 30 degrees Celsius made the big pastry tower rather soft and unstable.
Chef Gilles Stassart and architect Jean Bocabeille brought together a team of pastry chefs, architects, engineers and other artistic specialists to build the huge cake, hoping to make the Guinness Book of World Records.
It was unveiled Thursday (local time) at the Cite de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine in Paris and was supposed to last four days.
Fortunately, a representative from the Guinness book was there to record the short-lived creation.
It took 628 kilos of flour, 508 kilos of sugar, 350 eggs and 18 kilos of butter to make the bricks of cake used to build the pastry tower.
But the huge cake is not edible and will be turned into fertiliser.
Some pieces of the towering cake will be on display in an exhibition at the architecture centre until Sunday.

Taisto Miettinen, who was defending his champion title, raced through a 250 metre course with two hurdles and a pool in just over one minute and four seconds, carrying Kristiina Haapanen on his back.
The winners beat Estonia's Alar Voogla and Kristi Viltrop, who also took silver last year, by 0.4 seconds.
The 45-year-old Miettinen, a commercial lawyer by day, attended the competition for 10 years before grabbing gold and putting an end to Estonia's 11-year reign last year.
He said he did not beat his 2009 score of 62 seconds because of a bigger pool.
"I love competing and I love winning. We practiced a lot, but the race was not as easy as last year because the pool was bigger," he said.
He added the best way for a racer to carry the "wife" - in his case, a friend he has been racing with for four years - was "Estonian style".
"That means (for the racer) to dangle her upside down over his back."
Finland also won the third place bronze with the team of Ilpo Haalisto and Satu Juurinen.
Sonkajaervi village, located some 490 kilometres north of Helsinki, has in the past 15 years made its entertaining wife-carrying competition known around the world.
This year, 51 teams from 13 countries including Australia, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates competed in front of a crowd of 4,000.
The race was inspired by the legend of a local thug, Herkko Rosvo-Ronkainen, who lived in a forest in the late 1800s and is said to have snatched food and sometimes ladies from villages in the region.

A public vote on the Canadian singer's My World Tour page asked users which country he should tour next, with no restrictions on the nations that could be voted on.
This spurred users of imageboard website 4Chan to nominate North Korea, with the vote now turning viral.
There are now almost half a million votes to send Bieber to the secretive communist nation.
The contest, which ends at 1800 on 7 July, saw North Korea move from 24th to 1st place in less than two days, several thousand votes ahead of Israel.
....
Justin Bieber has been target of a number of internet pranks in recent weeks.
Last month, a post on 4Chan urged users to all search for the term "Justin Bieber Syphilis" pushing it to the top of Google Trend's Hot Searches list. And over the weekend, Justin Bieber videos on YouTube were the target for internet hackers, redirecting users to adult websites or triggering pop-up messages saying that the Canadian singer had died in a car crash.
Google temporarily suspended commenting on videos and issued a statement saying: "We took swift action to fix a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability." The vulnerability hole was patched a few hours later.
His Last FM page was also hit, with photos of the singer replaced by pornographic images.
There have also been false rumours circulating that Bieber had died, that he had joined a cult, and that his mother was offered $50,000 to pose topless in Playboy magazine.
"Let's take some time to answer some crazy (rumours)... I'm not dead," Bieber wrote in just one of his Twitter postings.
And last week he posted that "My mum is a moral woman... let's just leave that one for what it is... because that rumour just grossed and weirded me out."
