Baby's accidental call lands dad in jail

A baby playing with a telephone inadvertently called police to his house in westernmost Canada and to his "very surprised" father's marijuana-growing operation inside, police say.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police responded to an emergency 911 call in which the caller hung up without saying a word, Constable Janelle Canning told AFP on Wednesday.

The officers entered the White Rock residence, after knocks at the door went unanswered, she said.

"The father was very surprised to see us and insisted he hadn't called police," she said.

"The officers then observed his 11-month-old child playing with a cordless phone, pressing buttons randomly."

The mystery caller was identified, she said. "It appears the baby called us."

During a routine search of the house, the officers also uncovered 500 marijuana plants in two locked rooms on the main floor.

The 29-year-old father was arrested and faces charges of production of a controlled substance and mischief. He is to appear in court in April.

The baby boy was removed from the home by the Ministry of Children and Family, and was later released into his mother's custody.

Grassed up by his own flesh and blood.

This also proves that the Mounties always get their man...

Mother guilty over smoking boy, 3

A three-year-old boy lit a cigarette butt and smoked it in front of his mother, Merthyr Crown Court has heard.

The incident was filmed on a mobile and passed to social services by a friend of the boy's mother Kelly Marie Pocock.

The friend earlier spotted him smoking a cigarette and said it looked like he had been "smoking for many years".

The judge said it was an appalling case and Pocock, 24, from Merthyr Vale, was sentenced to 40 weeks suspended for two years after admitting child cruelty.

But Judge John Curran said he did not jail Pocock because of her "considerable efforts" since the incident.

Prosecutor Jonathan Rees told the court Pocock's friend Natasha Dudley filmed the events after visiting her home just after Christmas 2007.

Mr Rees said Ms Dudley had gone looking for the boy after he had been missing for 30 minutes.

"She found him underneath the bed with some cigarettes," said Mr Rees.

"He was actually smoking one at the time and Ms Dudley said it looked like he had been smoking for many years."

The court heard that when the boy was taken downstairs he went into the living room where he picked up a cigarette butt from an ashtray and smoked it.

Mr Rees said at this point, Pocock was having a telephone conversation so Ms Dudley decided to film the boy, such was her concern.

"The video demonstrates the boy placing a cigarette into his mouth, lighting it with a lighter and sucking, drawing smoke clearly into the lungs and he seems to do it with some accomplishment," said Mr Rees.

"It doesn't cause him any discomfort. He is sat on a chair close to the mother, who is talking on the phone.

"It is clear that the boy, at the age of three, knows what to do with a lighter and cigarette."

The video was forwarded to social services who then referred the matter to the police.

In interview, Pocock told officers that she did not appreciate the fact that her son was smoking as she was on the telephone.

She also told officers that she was "shocked" when the matter was drawn to her attention.

After being charged, Pocock entered a guilty plea on the basis that she had not seen her son smoking before and had not been told of the incident underneath the bed by Ms Dudley.

Claire Wilks, defending, asked Judge Curran to bear in mind the early guilty plea by her client.

"Fortunately time has now passed and in that time the defendant has been able to prove herself both to her children and, perhaps more importantly, their social worker," said Ms Wilks.

The court heard she had attended six parenting courses since the incident.

Judge Curran said the case was one of the most "extraordinary" he had ever come across.

The judge said the boy would not have been able to smoke without discomfort "unless he had acquired a habit".

"This is an appalling situation and I don't see how, despite your basis of plea, you could have been unaware of the fact," said Judge Curran.

The judge added that while the offence would normally cross the custody threshold, he did not want to cause her children any further emotional harm by separating them from their mother.

Apart from the suspended sentence, Judge Curran imposed a 12 month supervision requirement.

Hungry snake discovers you are what you eat
A New South Wales man has had an interesting encounter with not one but two snakes, and he has the photos to prove it.

Tony Barton from South Gundagai says he and his wife had just been out for lunch about a month ago when they returned home and spotted a black snake alongside the car.

It turned out to be a red belly black snake about 165 centimetres long - a species well known for a taste for other snakes.

"It looked like there was a stick or branch off a tree that was coming up towards it, so we drove past to about get 10 metres away from it and I ducked up the back lawn and around to have a close look," he said.

Mr Barton says his wife called out to him to ask him what he was staring at.

He yelled back, "Well, it's a jolly big black snake eating another one! Consuming it! You keep an eye on it and I'll duck in and get the camera."

Mr Barton says it took about 10 to 15 minutes for the black snake to fully consume the brown snake, which he says was about 135 centimetres long.

Then it went off for a snooze.

"It was fairly sluggish after such a huge meal," he said.

Regurgitator

Initially, Mr Barton thought someone had killed the snake and it was all a practical joke.

He says when the black snake finished eating the brown snake, something irritated the black and it moved off to try to get a bit of relief from the discomfort.

Not long after, the snake returned - this time to the back lawn.

"I walked up and got within three metres of it," he said.

"I was having a close look at it when it opened its mouth a little bit and I spotted this beady eye and the head of the brown snake in its mouth!

"So I got the camera ready, took the shot as the brown snake came out a few inches, fastened onto the black's lower jaw and pulled itself completely out.

"It had all this mucus all over it. Then the two parted ways."

Mr Barton reckons that somehow the brown snake turned itself around inside the black snake.

"When you tell these stories no-one believes you, but I have the photographs," he said.

Marijuana growers busted on Google Earth
08:54 AEST Fri Jan 30 2009
10 hours 36 minutes ago

Swiss police said they stumbled across a large marijuana plantation while using Google Earth, the search engine company's satellite mapping software.

Police said the find was part of a bigger investigation that led to the arrest of 16 people and seizure of 1.1 metric tons of marijuana as well as cash and valuables worth 900,000 Swiss francs ($A1.1 million).

Officers discovered the hemp field in the northeastern canton (state) of Thurgau last year while investigating an alleged drug ring, said the head of Zurich police's specialist narcotics unit Norbert Klossner.

The plantation, measuring almost 7,500 square metres, was hidden inside a field of corn. But officers using Google Earth to locate the address of two farmers suspected of involvement in the drug operation quickly spotted the illegal crop.

"It was an interesting chance discovery," said Klossner.

Prosecutor Gabi Alkalay told reporters in Zurich that she plans to complete her criminal investigation in February, after which she will formally charge the 16 suspects and ask for prison sentences for all of them.

The gang is alleged to have sold up to seven tons of hashish and marijuana between 2004 and 2008, with an annual turnover of 3-10 million francs a year, officials said.
Bet you never thought the police would be using spy satellites, did you?

A raccoon has bitten off a pervert's penis as he was trying to rape the animal.

Alexander Kirilov, 44, was on a drunken weekend with pals when he leapt on the terrified animal.

"When I saw the raccoon I thought I'd have some fun," he told stunned casualty surgeons in Moscow.

Now Russian plastic surgeons are trying to restore his mangled manhood.

"He's been told they can get things working again but they can't sew back on what the raccoon bit off.

"That's gone forever so there isn't going to be much for them to work with," said one friend.

Associated Press said:

Police kill pet chimp after woman is injured

STAMFORD, Conn. - A large pet chimpanzee attacked a woman visiting a Stamford home yesterday, leaving her with serious facial injuries, police said.

Officers were called to a house on Rockrimmon Road after the owner lost control of the 175-pound primate, which was shot and killed by a responding officer when it tried to get into his cruiser, police said.

The injured woman was taken to Stamford Hospital. Her condition and identity were not available, but police described her as a woman in her 50s.

The Advocate of Stamford reported on its website last night that the owner called 911 and tried to stop the attack by stabbing the chimpanzee with a butcher knife.

As emergency crews arrived to treat the victim, the chimpanzee - named Travis - revived and opened the door of one of the police cruisers.

The officer inside fired several shots, killing the chimp, The Advocate reported.

Travis's owner and two officers also were hurt. The extent of their injuries was not known.

The 15-year-old chimpanzee was well-known around Stamford because he rode along in trucks belonging to the towing company operated by his owners.

Police have dealt with him in the past, including an incident in 2003 when he escaped from his owners' vehicle in downtown Stamford and was lose for two hours. Officers used cookies, macadamia treats, and ice cream in an attempt to lure him back into the vehicle, but subdued him only after he became too tired to resist.

The owners lived at the same Rockrimmon Road address to which police were dispatched for the attack.

At the time of the 2003 escape, police said the owners told them the chimpanzee was toilet trained, dressed himself, took his own bath, ate at the table, and drank wine from a stemmed glass.

That's why you don't get a chimp as a pet :)

You're in big trouble now, Mr. License!

Quote

DUBLIN (Reuters) - Irish police have solved the mystery of a Polish recidivist who clocked up 50 traffic offenses on different addresses and who was never caught, after one officer noticed his name meant driving license in Polish.

An internal police memo cited by Irish papers Thursday said officers taking details of Polish traffic offenders had been mistakenly using "Prawo Jazdy," printed in the top right corner of the driving license, as the holder's name.

"Prawo Jazdy is actually the Polish for driving license and not the first and surname on the license," the police memo dated June 2007 said. "It is quite embarrassing to see the system has created Prawo Jazdy as a person with over 50 identities."

A police spokesman declined to comment on the reports.

About 200,000 Polish people flocked to Ireland during the boom years of its "Celtic Tiger" economy but a poll in November indicated a third of them planned to leave due to recession.

Boy Killes Anally When Office Chair Explodes

Quote

Well, stories don't get much worse than this. A 14-year-old boy in China was killed when his chair exploded, sending chunks of metal into his rectum. The bleeding this caused killed him.

The alleged explosion came from the gas cylinder that was in the base of the chair, the part that allowed the user to adjust the seat up and down. The canister gets compressed when you sit on it, but can it actually create enough energy to make the seat cushion explode like that and kill a man? I doubt it, but this is what people are reporting.

In other news, I am working from a beanbag from now on. Sweet merciful crap.
