"Management and staff at the Oberhausen Sea Life Centre were devastated to discover that oracle octopus Paul, who achieved global renown during the recent World Cup, had passed away overnight," the aquarium said in a sombre statement.
"Paul amazed the world by correctly predicting the winners of all Germany's World Cup clashes, and then of the final," said Sea Life manager Stefan Porwoll.
"His success made him almost a bigger story than the World Cup itself ... We had all naturally grown very fond of him and he will be sorely missed."
Paul beat the odds during the World Cup by correctly forecasting all eight games he was asked to predict, including Spain's 1-0 win over the Netherlands in the final.
For the prediction, two boxes were lowered into the salty soothsayer's tank, each containing a mussel and a flag of the two opposing teams.
Watched by a myriad of reporters, Paul would head to one box, wrench open the lid and gobble the tasty morsel, with the box he plumped for being deemed the likely winner.
Paul's body is now in cold storage while the aquarium decides "how best to mark his passing."
However, Paul's fans need not despair. The aquarium has already been grooming a successor, to be named Paul like his mentor.
"We may decide to give Paul his own small burial plot within our grounds and erect a modest permanent shrine," Mr Porwoll said.
"While this may seem a curious thing to do for a sea creature, Paul achieved such popularity during his short life that it may be deemed the most appropriate course of action."

Imagine a group of people who are all blind, deaf and slightly demented and suddenly someone in the crowd asks, "What are we to do?"... The only possible answer is, "Look for a cure". Until you are cured, there is nothing you can do.
And since you don't believe you are sick, there can be no cure.

That something is to run 40 marathons in 40 days and raise a million pounds for charity in the process.
He said: "It started over a glass of wine... a friend of mine said, 'You'll be 65 next year... you should do something significant to celebrate'."
And so the idea to raise money for the Wooden Spoon charity while running from John O'Groats to Land's End was born.
Stuart said: "I introduced the Wooden Spoon charity to the island so it's my favourite."
Otherwise known as the Children's Charity of Rugby it has provided funds for the climbing wall at Baubigny Schools, work at Les Rondins School amongst other things.
Stuart will be setting off from John O'Groats on 15 March and running for the next 40 days reaching Land's End during the Easter weekend, meaning the challenge fits in with Lent.
Though he will be the only one running the 40 marathons Stuart said he has a support team that will number at least 36 people including doctors, masseuses, drivers and others willing to lend a hand.
This is not Stuart's first marathon, in 1986 he completed the Glasgow Marathon in a little over three hours, but he has never done anything quite on this scale.
By the time the marathons come round Stuart will have been training for more than a year, he said: "I'm working carefully and cautiously toward the goal."
This has included working weekly on fitness with local cyclist Ann Bowditch as well as sticking to a strict diet and practicing yoga.
When Stuart spoke to us in October 2010 he was running five to six miles a day, and 11 on Saturdays and Sundays. But, he said the weekend runs would extend to 24 miles on the weekends as the challenge neared.
A Minecraft player created a computer capable of actual calculations using only sticks, stones and fire.
Using the tools and materials in Minecraft, a Minecraft player named "theinternetftw" created a simple Artihmetic Logic Unit, or ALU, which is the basis of all computer microprocessors. By using torches to ignite Redstone wires, which can then carry a charge, theinternetftw's computer is able to perform simple arithmetic. In the demo video, he adds 2 + 1, and the answer is output as 11, which equals 3 in binary code. The project is far from complete as he plans to add RAM and registers to make it a legitimate computer.
Using technical prowess far beyond mine, theinternetftw got the idea to build the ALU from a book called The Elements of Computer Systems from the MIT Press. He implemented the hack computer system in Minecraft based on the specs described in that book.
If your brain is hurting from the fact that someone used a computer game, which runs on many more complex ALUs combined into a microprocessor, to create a rudimentary ALU, you are not the only one. It's like Alanis Morrisette's Ironic song and Double Rainbow all combined into one.
I'm not sure what it means, but it's awesome.
Two guys with semiautomatic firearms were hellbent on breaking street for Call of Duty: Black Ops, sticking up a Baltimore-area GameStop and looting it of 100 copies of the game, due out Tuesday.
The Harford County, Md. sheriff's office said the heist happened Saturday evening, and the robbers waited until closing time to hold up the GameStop in the Festival at Bel Air shopping center in Bel Air, about 30 miles northeast of Baltimore.
Deputies said two customers stopped by the store mid-robbery and were forced at gunpoint into a storage area. Neither they nor employees were hurt. The robbers might also be behind an Oct. 21 holdup at GameStop's nearby Aberdeen, Md. location.
A sheriff's office spokesman asked locals to call them if they're offered a copy of the game before Tuesday's release date. A quick scour of Craigslist in that area turned up no such offers.
That brilliant 'shop was done simultaneously by readers Amoliski and Yashinu.

But yeah, that's probably what happened.
If they did it without the people's consent though, then it's gonna end in court.

LONDON (Reuters) – Britain's Queen Elizabeth has joined Facebook, adding a presence on the world's most popular social network to the royal family's accounts on Twitter, photo-sharing site Flickr and YouTube.
The British monarchy's Facebook page (http://www.facebook....BritishMonarchy) does not allow users to "friend" the Queen or to send her messages, but offers updates on royal news and diary events.
By midday on Monday, a few hours after the page went live, 60,000 people had clicked to signal they liked it, meaning they will receive updates on the royal family's activities in their Facebook news feeds.
The page does not display personal details such as the Queen's relationship status, interests or political views.
Britain's royal family prides itself on keeping up to date with new technologies.
In 2008, the Queen uploaded a video to YouTube during a visit to Google's London offices, in 2009 a British monarchy Twitter account was launched, and a royal Flickr account was created this year.
Facebook was launched in 2004 and now has more than half a billion active users around the world.
