Alright, this is probably something really dumb to find out but this is how I found the veterancy system to work (maybe because I'm hellbent on veterancy editing). It doesn't actually go by like, how many units you've killed, it seems to go by how much damage you've inflicted from that unit. Because I had my Harvester get to Heroic (finally!) By screwing up power plants, other buildings, and the like. I also found this out because I had a Rifleman Squad attack a Refinery and they gained veterancy by damaging it like 1/3 of the way. It also seems as if though, their rate of fire doubles. Because an APC I had unloaded like crazy on everything it fired on. They also get the red tracers a la Generals/Zero Hour. The fire FX though, doesn't change to like red muzzle flashes (this may be because I have to run Tiberium Wars on lower settings). You should also know it only applies to the third level of veterancy that units gain this and auto heal, with the exception of those units who auto heal on their own. But anyway, this is all I know.
Cheers!

Also, the pips or w/e they're called are confusing the first time you see them.

Did someone of you ever had a Star Mammoth? In Skrimish I mean, not the one Mission.
Realy Insane if you ask me, but it also takes a very long time to get one.
The Promotion System is a realy Great Idea and System. Since its implemented, Command & Conquer Games give you a realy new Experience and open doors to even more Tactics.

I know that a heroic Flame Tank fires longer bursts of flame, does more damage and auto heals. I have yet to get a heroic Mammoth...*makes note to do so*
You should also notice that Nod's symbols for verterancy are different from GDI's (and I'm sure the Scrin's are different still).
I've had my suspicion about this too, as for me it seemed to take a bit long for my units to gain veterancy, but now I'm curious. I think I'll play a game just to test this out.

I suppose I either didn't pay attention, finished it too quickly, or had units die too soon (or a combination)

Nuker, when you get the Mammoth to Heroic (or Star rank), you will be amazed. That thing could almost be a one man army had it not be open to lots of airstrikes. A Venom, when you get it to their third level, is insane in the way it fires the laser cannons. Same goes with the Scorpion. The best Heroic unit I found to be, is the Stealth Tank, because it can unload its pod of rockets a lot quicker and still get away. Best hit and run unit ever when it's Heroic.

This sounds like a better system that the 'kill ratio' system.
Will anyone post the veterancy pips for Nod and GDI? Not necessarily pics, a description would do so I actually know when to take care of a particular unit.

the air and do press ups, which is realy cheesy if you ask me.

Press ups? They do that when idle. Though infantry always cheer when they get a kill, which may make you think it's related o veterancy.

C&C has always had the 'cheesy' unit animations

My theory is that EA got Hexetic's "C&C top 10" video and applied all 10 to the game
