In all honesty, that is pathetic. It all lies in the parents. They need to learn to bash their children over the head... And its not just video games.

*sigh* Everything has to be a disorder this or syndrome that these days. It's starting to make me sick. Jumpy kid? Oh, he's got ADD/ADHD, for sure. Nothing at all to do with your lack of attention for your child or his sugar-rich diet. Kid doesn't have friends? Oh, then he must be autistic. Nothing to do with the fact that he gets the crap beat out of him by his alcoholic dad at home. Kid spends too much time in front of a screen? Oh, then he's addicted. He can't be spoiled, of course, or seeking a way out of a crappy life that doesn't involve needles, or just simply liking this or that game a lot. No, there is definitely something wrong with your kid, don't worry, we'll set straight those years of abuse and neglect for you, if you just sign your name on the dotted line and turn all your bank account numbers, physical possessions and soul over to us. Don't worry, he's in good hands.

Agreed with this. People love stamping 'disorder' on anything these days. Instead of just saying 'a little less good at socialising' or 'more energetic' they have to give it a name and call it 'abnormal'. Well remember, the more disorders there are, the less people are sane. It's only a matter of time before we're all crazy.

I could not agree with this statement anymore if I had written it myself!!!
To many parents, and the media included (journos have kids to), blame 3rd parties for the behaviour of their kids. You always here the parents say "s/he fell in with a bad crowd". That is the shitest excuse. Cause you were too busy looking the other way at your midlife crisis and the frickin porsche you neighbours have bought you self-centered egotist!
If parents tried to be friends with their kids rather than let them become playstation-attention-seeking-whores then we'd all be better for it!!!

The reason is that the so-called "Parents" are afraid to take responsibility for themselves. They don't want to "look bad", even for the sake of their own child. They just drug 'em up and send 'em to school. If you start to complain about it, you get a Sally-Sob-Story and now all of a sudden you're the bad guy. Tough luck. You just have issues. You need help. You need your medication. It's never the Parents fault, they're always perfect angels.

Sadly, this is the typical family nowadays, and it has to stop.. What makes me sick is that Parents refuse to even teach their own kids anything anymore. Just stick them in "School". Send them to Sex-Ed. Send them to Sports. Just get them away from you so you can live your bloody life happily.

All too often we find ourselves longing for "Real" parents; the kind that will sit down for a good game of Shockwave with you, the kind that talks to you and actually gives a flip about what you're doing; your whole life in general. The Dream-Parents who listen, not talk. The kind that knows the solution to life problems doesn't like with some shitty drugs or goddamn "Anti-Depressants".

Life sucks, and I hope it gets better.

Anyway, I do agree. It all lies in the parents. Me? I supply my parents with a list of facts that say I should use the computer as much as possible. And though they don't necessarily agree, they see my reasoning and let me use it freely. Sometimes I abuse it and sometimes I get bored with it so whatever.

While I do agree with all of your statements, there is a degree of devotion to games that is on the side of, well, addiction. Take the kid in China for example. He played World of Warcraft for 36 hours straight (not bad, I'm sure we've all been there), but then he commit suicide, claiming that he wanted to live among the heroes in the game. While this could have been predicted by the parents, this is still very extreme behavior. Given, that is not enough of the population to designate as a "disorder", it simply eases a parent's mind. Now they think that they didn't do anything wrong, the video games "possessed" their kids. On top of that, I have known kids like those described, the transition isn't instantaneous, it is a long and slow process, they don't just get up and scream at their parents. There's your argument right away. If her kid was getting addicted to games, then she would notice changes and see warnings very early, her kid wouldn't just freak out on her one day. I hope that I got my point across right, and that you understand, because this is my first post here and I'd rather not look like a fool.

Anyway, I fully agree with the above. Some people do get a serious addiction but that is more a rarity than being struck by lightning.

Now here's another thought, games don't cause antisocial behavior, it is quite the opposite. When one cannot interact with his/her peers, they simply resort to doing so out-of-person in a video game or over the internet.

(And no I have never had a moment of playing a game 36 hours straight, I can't go 6 without getting extremely bored)

I think the chinese kid is a good example. His parents must have been to blame to a degree as they raised him and would have had an influence on his social skills. His obvious lack of them caused his death! Who picks up a game [and as my good man Solo wing pointed out] can play for that long? Someone who is mentally defective in the first place. He either had a very serious medical illness before he picked up WoW or he was integrated into his social circle right!!

Yes, I understand that my avatar and name are an odd combination, but I chose the handle, hunterm16a2, back when I knew nothing of guns. Other than that, you were right .

Anyways, I think that the kids involved are the most to blame. I mean, bad parenting is a problem, but all-in-all, the kid should know that reliance on video games is downright unhealthy. It's like looking at the sun over and over again... Common sense... Also, I don't think parents can be blamed for a lack of social skills. Some people are simply born with an antisocial personality, and thus they retreat to video games in order to get the little society they need.

You aren't born with antisocial skills. Social skills are....social, meaning you develop them through learning. The focus of learning is from a parent. Ergo ADD etc aren't physical conditions caused from disease, illness or infection, but from undefined rules and understanding of behaviour caused in part or whole by the parents, the primary teachers. If you don't believe this then google "feral children" and you will see that nurture makes the man, not nature (biology), failing that study sociology or psychology at school. And I don't think "common sense" can apply to someone whom in this instance is prepared to kill themselves to be with the heroic sprites in WoW!!!!!

Anyway, I am very antisocial in most situations. I hung out at a party yet I barely talked, I speak when spoken to. But I've been in social situations all the time and unless I have a really thick skull, my behavior ain't caused because I haven't learned.

It is far easier to let a TV channel or game console play the role of "baby-sitter" than calling someone up to watch your kid, or Heaven forbid, the parent actually having to monitor their own child's activities. Then people wonder why their child(ren) are obese. Then we wonder why Mc Donald's or Burger King is getting sued, because the parent takes the kid(s) to these establishments and either lets them buy, or buys the unhealthy food for them. It is easier to stamp the "disorder" or "broken" label on an issue, than it is to get your hands dirty and try to fix it from the starting point.

News like this makes me sick, since it shows me what I already know, and that is, a vast majority of people are too lazy and irresposible.
