I didn't get the goal of this yet.

As far as I know, you got some Brain and can switch between Robots, but apart from that I didn't get any further.
Are there any big Mods for this?

Check around on their forums, I'm seriously considering if I should whip out the credit card for this one.

Here are some tricks to use: Dummies make the best miners, Dreadnoughts are good for defense and AA, loading up a rocket with just grenades makes it an excellent explosive if crashed into something, and you build doors using the last few bunker parts.
Also: A mod that adds mechs. =o

You basically, with a friend or AI, fight each other by buying troops and trying to seize their base (bases you build yourself!) and destroy their "Master" brain, which then ends the game. There are vehicles like dropships and rockets that you can control yourself and explode when shot enough or hit a surface at a certain velocity. To buy things though, you will have to mine gold by digging into the ground with a digger and you automatically get the gold when it touches you.
If you like the game, i would recommend buying it now because the 18 dollar price is actually a discount of the real price which i don't really know yet and will go back to full price soon.

Cortex command is an extremely moddable and flexible game and with that, comes a lot of mods obviously

(above are some good mods, if you want more, just go to the mod section, there's literally hundreds. I think you have to register to download, i can't remember since i'm always logged in.)
http://www.datarealms.com/devlog/ - this is the devlog for the game, check it regularly, the creator usually updates often, but currently he hasn't updated since early January.

I also think it is definitely worth it.

No. Just No. Stealing someone's hard work when it is such a small developer is just wrong.
