Fight Club - 10/10

Serious contender for 'best movie I ever saw' since I watched it easily over a hundred times. Fight Club is one of those films you can't put into any category, the plot is very good, the acting superb, and a whole bunch of other praising adjectives would follow here if I'd have felt like it. Starting off with one of the stranges beginnings of a movie, the plot follows the life of Edward Norton's character which is profoundly uninteresting and boring, after which he starts to practice his own "therapy" for his insomnia and eventually bumps into Brad Pitt which changes his life completely; I know, that doesn't sound particularly great but words won't do the plot justice anyway, you just need to see it. IMHO easily the best film and acting of both Norton AND Pitt, this one is a must watch, no matter what your movie tastes are.


And now for something completely different:


Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - 6/10

Most of the movie wasn't even that embarrassing, actually. Otherwise, I can't really think of any real appraisals for this one, tbh. As far as I'm concerned this is by far the worst of the series. I couldn't help but lol at Cate Blanchett, though XD .

Yesterday, I was down with a fever. So I watched something.

1. Kurtlar Vadisi Irak(Valley of the Wolves:Iraq)- I'd give it an 11 rating (because Americans are not the saviours of this known world; and not only Americans but also anyone can be cruel and brutal)

2. Voces Inocentes (Voices of the Innocents)- a well-earned rating of 10 (If you were in Chava's shoes, how would you deal with such a problem?)

The Exorcist - 8,5/10

Not having watched this earlier was definitely a bad choice - it's clearly a classic piece. Though all the good stuff is piled up near the end while the beginning isn't very worthwhile, this movie has some really good stuff to offer. The possession of a young girl adds this layer of icing on the cake because a young girl is, of course, in such stark contrast with the creature that possesses her, and the degree of unnaturality (:awe) that she exhibits is built up in a well-executed crescendo. Recommended for anyone likes horrors, thrillers or both.

I watched that last night, it was rather good.

Another film I watched recently was Hancock, a bit of an oddball, you think you have an idea of how the film will work, then suddenly that idea is blown away, not neccesarily in a good way. The twist is to much, its almost as if they didn't know what to do, so the the writers had this "Harebrained idea". However it is nice to have a film where the hero is not a god among gods for once.

1408 - 9/10

I watched a week or so ago (and then I watched again, the day after ) An awesome "horror" film that doesn't follow the "Oh no! I'm stuck in the woods, and my friends are being hacked to pieces" or the "Oh no! People are coming back to life, and I don't know what to call these 'people' because for some reason no-one has ever heard of zombies" storylines... granted there have been similar things in the past, but it is defiantly a welcome change to the current style.

1408 is based upon a short story written by Steven King. A writer, Mike Enslin (John Cusack), who investigates allegedly haunted hotels. He hasn't found anything to support the theory of ghosts, so has become very pessimistic to the whole thing. That is until he hears about the dolphin hotel, room 1408. The hotel manger of the dolphin, Gerald Olin, is played by Samuel L. Jackson and there is one quote that pretty much sums up his character.

When he gets into the room, at least IMO, it's the closet thing I have seen to "accurately" portraying a nightmare.

Not as good as I hoped. The beginning is quite good and the movie creates a subtle horror atmosphere throughout, but the ending is somewhat unfinished and a bit dead before it arrives. Nonetheless, not a bad movie. Wouldn't recommend it to anyone but horror fans, though.

Let's see what we can add to this then - watched a few movies recently - been having trouble sleeping etc so it seemed like as good a time as any.

Death Race.

There's a reasonable basis for this movie, even if the outcome is far from spectacular. Following immense economic downturn in the US, prisons are run by corporations, who do so for the massive amounts of money piled into them by the government. One of these places runs the competition called Death Race, where prisoners race in souped up, heavily armoured cars, with guns and all sorts of other crap attached to them to attack and defend against each other. Win 5 races, and you go free. But of course, there's a far greater chance you're going to end up smashed to bloody bits inside your car. Anyways, this chap who's won 4 times, called Frankenstein, pops his clogs at the end of the fourth race - his car is blown up and rolls multiple times etc. Very coincidentally, Jason Straham's character is framed for murder, and ends up in prison, where you also find out very quickly that he is an ex-Nascar racer and is rather suited for all this malarkey, even if he doesn't want to kill the others. He's offered the role of Frankenstein, and if he wins the fifth race, he's free. Of course, the plot is sublimely easy to figure out, so much so that the main characters have it figured less than halfway through the movie itself. Each prisoner gets a navigator, and of course, to continue with stereotypes, they're all smoking hotties from the women's prison down the road. The first time they get out of their bus, I don't think there's a camera shot that is not focusing on an extremely perky part of a woman's body. At all. Not long afterwards, the movie describes itself perfectly, when describing why the prison runs the Death Race: 'Cars, action-packed death, and smoking hot women. What else do you need to attract millions?' Nonetheless, forgiving the movie it's transparency, the action is at times interesting, and there are certainly worse movies out there, and Stratham plays his lead role very well, although I'm not a fan of the female prison warden. 5.5/10

The Shawshank Redemption

Watched this again the other day, and the movie loses none of it's power with repeated viewings. Still only one of two movies to bring a tear to my eye, I simply cannot understand how this did not sweep the floor at the Oscars in it's time. Phenomenal doesn't begin to describe any part of it - everything is done to perfection - acting, script, camera work, soundtrack, casting. You name it, and it's been done to a T. The story follows a young banker, Andy Dufrene (Tim Robbins), who is very successful for his age and for the time, and is wrongly accused of having shot his wife and her lover in their condo on the golf course where he plays. Sentenced to life in jail at Shawshank prison, the movie follows him adapting to life on the inside, dealing with the homosexual male 'Sisters', the murderous prison guards led by Captain Hanley, who would as much look as you as pound you into a fleshy pulp with their batons, and of course, the God-loving, completely corrupt warden. However, Dufrene makes the best of a bad lot, and makes friends with many of the inmates, in particular with Morgan Freeman's character; Red. The two become good friends, and the movie follows the many ins and outs at Shawshank, with the playing of Mozart's Duettino of Sull'aria across the loudspeaker system still one of the most phenomenally moving and brilliant pieces of cinema to this day. The twist at the end, and the memoirs of Brooks Hatlen, one of the librarians, also stand out as key sections of a fantastic film. Never have I seen a movie quite as moving as this, and would recommend it to anybody, no matter your tastes. 10/10

There Will be Blood

An odd one this - been out for a fair while now, and only just got around to watching the movie. I was wary of watching this, as I'm not usually much of a fan of an epic movie, concerning only one key player. This didn't buck that trend for me much at all. Undoubtedly, Daniel Day Lewis gives the performance of a lifetime, portraying all but the lifetime of an oil baron during the oil rush of the early 1900s. After having been informed of a place where oil can be found on cheap land, Day-Lewis sets out after it, and to exploit the surrounding population. Sweet talking his way into buying up much of the land, he quickly establishes refineries on the best sites, and begins pouring oil out of the ground. There are a few problems, such as with the local religious community, and with problems with his son. He shows a cold, threatening streak, and honestly gives you the impression that you'd never like to meet him on a dark alley at night. However, it all becomes a bit samey, and after a while you expect something to come along, and for him to mercilessly shrug it off and move on. There is very little focus beyond his life, and makes you wonder, if instead of giving Day-Lewis so much screen time, if the writers could have given some of the supporting cast a little more time to themselves. Nonetheless, the acting by Day-Lewis is phenomenal, but could have been cut down by a good half an hour, and you'd be missing very little. He deserved the Oscar. There's no way that the movie would have done. 7.5/10

American Beauty

Yet another Oscar winner, American Beauty goes down in the history books for the phenomenally accurate portrayal of American suburban existence, combining people from all walks of life on a single block in the suburbs of an un-named city. No matter the way that the movie comes across, Kevin Spacey steals the show. As Lester Brown, he is the perfect average American in every way - a dead end job, a going nowhere marriage, a daughter who is incredibly unstable, and the classic midlife crisis. So much so, that he develops a very erotic fascination for his daughter's best friend, Mena Suvari. Spacey puts so much effort into the role, and perfectly comes across as the loser who is trying to turn his life around before it is too late, but classically failing to realise that the good is all around him, and that reliving his past (flipping burgers/smoking pot/owning the car of his youth) will serve him no good at all. However, unlike There Will be Blood, Spacey is supported by an astonishing selection of supporting characters, whose own stories twist in and out of his own as if completely and utterly naturally. There is his daughter's realisation of her own self, which is helped along the way by the boy next door, who also happens to have an abusive military father, and has previous drug offenses that he has been caught for, as well as current ones that he has not. This goes hand and hand with his daughter's best friend, who is driven towards Spacey's character by a overwhelming desire to not be ordinary, and to be something above everybody else, her emotion becoming further derailed when the daughter manages to get a boyfriend before she does. And why is Spacey driven to this? Well, it's his wife, who constant overwhelming energy, self-belief and general neuroticness drive him slowly insane as he can no longer cope with her. They push each other away, and go about their own things, while still maintaining their marriage - for the sake of whom is never really revealed. No matter the number of stories, they gel perfectly, and make everything work just perfectly. Combined with some exceptional camerawork and a heck of a score, this makes American Beauty one of those movies that can't be missed, no matter your taste in movie. It twists and turns, yet never strays far enough from the main storyline so as to confuse you, and rounds up the film in the most excellent ending I have seen in a long while. 10/10

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - 10/10

There are some movies that I watch that leave me hanging. Others, leave me cursing and still some have no real impact on me beyond a minor laugh or adrenaline rush. A few movies however, seem to to strike me with their genius cinematography combined with excellent plot and five star acting. Benjamin Button is one of those movies. Basically, the story is of a man who is born with the physiology of a dying elder. As his life progresses, he gets younger until he dies as an infant. The amazing thing about this movie is the incredible attention to detail. In one scene at the time of WWII, you hear Roosevelt's "Day of Infamy" speech. In another you see the first launch of the Saturn V rocket. Many scenes are shot with deep focus i.e. no blurred background so you can scrutinize with extreme accuracy. Finally, Brad Pitt has had both good and bad movies. This definitely falls into the former. The drama can be quite depressing for some as it involves much death, yet it delivers the important message that you can only understand life looking backwards all the while you must look forward to carry on living. Definitely must win an Oscar for best director and best cinematography and possibly best picture.

Wall-E - 9/10

I have always found Pixar's CGI movies to be highly entertaining to audiences of all age groups. Wall-E is the story of a robot who gets left behind on the Earth after a project was made to get people in space while the Earth would be restored. Through excellent animation and voice, Disney gave these machines emotions normally associated with humans. The movie is full of clever humor and Wall-E's startup sound is that of a Mac. Geek references FTW. Its all light hearted fun despite being somewhat corny sometimes but hey thats what kids love eh?

Mamma Mia - 7/10

A light hearted musical full of ABBA's songs. The premise behind the movie is that a young woman is getting married however she has never met her father. She finds her mother's old diary and determines three candidates and invites all three to the wedding. Chaos ensues. I watched in on the plane when I was heading back to Montreal from Beirut. It turned out to be a lot more fun than I expected. It's a very feel good movie with the musical bits not taking any excessive time from the acting. A few surprises here and there and great for some laughs. Only to be watched with a group pf friends or family though. It bored me on the plane but there weren't many better movies.

Vicky Christina Barcelona - 9/10

A very artsy movie set in one of the finest cultural capitals in the world. Two very different young women go to Barcelona for different purposes. One is engaged and believes love is about stability. The other is a wildfire of emotions. When they meet a local artist and become involved with him and his unstable ex-wife, their understandings of love are completely overturned. This movie is perfect to watch when you're all alone. There's this sarcasm to the movie that shows that there is no one true way to define that human feeling known as love. The scenes are well directed and Penelope Cruz is such a bomb. That and you get to see her make out with Scarlett Johannsen.

Eagle Eye - 8.5/10

The plot may have become fairly generic what with the idea that sentient AIs whose directive is to protect Humankind decide that it is our leaders who put us in danger and they must be eliminated, but the movie manages to pull off some pretty decent action scenes and the plot though slightly predictable is still enjoyable. Shia LaBeouf has certainly improved since the days of Even Stevens. The dialogue was straight up and his character manages to fit in very well.

The Kingdom - 9/10

a Jamie Foxx movie.. this is a high-intensity thriller about a team of elite FBI agents sent to Saudi Arabia to solve a brutal mass murder happened in the American Compound in Saudi caused by a suicide bomber.. dam for me it was really an unforgettable movie for me, you can see it what will happen when an American agents surrounded in a hostile city.. and it also view the friendship of Islam and Christianity.. must watch movie..
